Wednesday Walk - At the Graveyard Again! People will Talk ...

I was reading up about local graves of interest in my area. From the information I'd read, I popped into the next village to go and find the grave of a priest, maybe from around the late 12th or early 13th century. He had worked at what was commonly known at the time, as the 'Leper Hospital' that was once situated nearby.

In the year 2000, a human skeleton was found in a local garden. It was found out later, that there was a big possibility it was the body of the priest. He was then re-interred in the cemetery.

The church was fenced off when we got there. It looked as though some building work was in progress so we couldn’t go in.

The story of the priest made local news and after a bit of detective work looking at old photographs, we finally found the priest's grave. It was right at the entrance and we had driven straight past it! Great detectives we are!

Afterwards, we carried on having a wander around the churchyard before it started to look too weird!

I know some may find exploring a cemetery to be a bit weird but not me I find it interesting and tells you a bit of the history of the area

Next Wednesday, I'm going to try and keep out of the graveyard! 🙂

That's a shame that you had to leave!

I don't mind you guys looking too weird to capture the mysteries of such old graves...🤣

So you think that the old priest was actually intentionally buried in the garden or fell in there while he was gardening one day...?

Well ... they said they did some kind of test on the skeleton and decided there was a good chance it was the priest. I still don’t know how they came to that, but it makes a great story. It also brings gullible people like me into the graveyard! 🙂

Perhaps, but it's a bit vague. As long as I find the grave I'm looking for, I'm happy. I'm easily pleased!

Oh so you don't just 'happen by', you're actually looking for specific graves- ancestors and such?

We sometimes just call in but I find it more interesting to go look for a specific grave. I don't always find them though.

Cool, some might think that that's pretty morbid hobby, me on the other hand thinks its a great idea to stoke the fires of history, mystery and intrigue!

It certainly brings you closer to history. I seem to spend some time wandering graveyards and churches when I'm on a vacation. Very fitting for you to post this in October!

Ah yes! Although, with me it's becoming a weekly thing, but the old graves are so interesting.
