Violas Or Pansies….. My Actifit Report Card: March 16 2026

Violas or pansies…..what’s the difference between them?

We are into another 🙄 atmospheric river with the potential for flooding yet again. In the last 24 hours, we’ve had 1.1” of rain with a forecast touting numbers for tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday at 100% chance and for Friday, only a 95% chance. Best be getting the boats and amphibious vehicles out!

With the sky leaking so badly, we decided to go to Bellingham for the afternoon. There was an item needed from the Home Depot, so I took the opportunity to spy a few more flowers. My attention landed on the pansy and the viola and what maybe made them different. I asked ChatGPT for information.

Violas and pansies are closely related flowering plants—both belong to the genus Viola—and are especially popular in cool-season gardens. They look similar at first glance, but there are some clear differences.

It said the scientific name is Viola × wittrockiana.

The blooms typically are 2”-4” across and have “bold faces”. They have a wide range of colors and do well in cool weather. The growth habit is a more upright plant. It went on to say that pansies are hybrids developed for showy blooms. They’re great for containers and garden beds where you want strong visual impact.

Violas are smaller-typical bloom is usually under 1.5”. They are more delicate looking and with subtle or an absence of “face” markings. Their colors in comparison to the pansy are softer and more blended. Their blooming season is longer and the plant growth is more compact. They also bloom longer and more frequently than the pansy does.

Both plants can benefit from dead heading, but if you want longer blooming and a more resilient plant, violas might be the choice to make.

A shot from an interesting perspective of the windshield of Zuki.

That’s gonna be it for today. Take care and enjoy the rest of your day wherever you are! 🙏🌏🙏

BSB John 18:20-25

I am not asking on behalf of them alone, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one— I in them and You in Me—that they may be perfectly united, so that the world may know that You sent Me and have loved them just as You have loved Me.
Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
Righteous Father, although the world has not known You, I know You, and they know that You sent Me. And I have made Your name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love You have for Me may be in them, and I in them.

With the rainy day keeping me from my garden work I had no choice but do my Tax return preparation paperwork. I know I will be paying income taxes this 2025 year. I'm dreading supporting my governments shopping habits.

I do not blame you there sis! They already get enough $ as it is, and to have to pay more, well it adds injury to insult! Take care! !BBH

Looks like it's always spring in Home Depot! Also - just get both. I mean, it's plants. You're doing the world a favor planting them. And they both look gorgeous.

Valid point, but until the weather straightens out and I can actually go out and plant, I will have to wait. We are in a 'pineapple express' for the moment and it's more like spring once again. It soon will be, so I will get to planting eventually. Ironically, I have one pot outdoors that still has last year's pansies growing; no blooms but the plants are still living! There is hope for them!

Take care and thank you for stopping by! !LADY

What a fascinating deep dive into the world of violas and pansies! 🌸 I love that you turned a rainy day errand into a little botanical investigation. The way you described their differences makes me want to pay closer attention next time I see them—especially the idea of violas being more delicate and resilient with that longer blooming season. Also, your photo through the Zuki's windshield captures the mood perfectly. Stay safe with all that rain coming! 🙏🌧️
