Eran frecuentes los relatos en la ciudad de Sevilla, acerca de un gran tesoro con extrañas propiedades escondido en algún lugar en las profundidades de lo que hoy se conoce como el golfo de México en el nuevo mundo, el corsario José Gaspar apodado “Gasparilla”, creció escuchando estas historias de su padre Juan Gaspar, quien aseguraba conocer el secreto que escondía aquel misterioso tesoro. Cuando Juan Gaspar falleció, en su lecho de muerte entregó a José una carta, esta contenía el secreto y la ubicación del tesoro, así como una advertencia sobre un gran peligro que enfrentaría todo aquel que se embarcase en su búsqueda.

Y así Gasparilla había encontrado un verdadero motivo para emprender un largo y peligroso viaje al nuevo mundo en su búsqueda y de sus secretos, por lo que decidió reunir a su tripulación de 60 hombres, liderados por su teniente Lope de Aguirre conocido como “Cabeza de perro” y segundo al mando, prometiéndoles interminables riquezas en piedras preciosas y oro, de manera que ninguno pudo resistirse ante aquellas promesas, y emprender esta aventura.

El 19 de junio de 1710, a bordo de la embarcación “El Marigalente”, Gasparilla y su tripulación, zarparon hacia el nuevo mundo, navegando durante 16 días en el océano atlántico, atravesando violentas tormentas, marejadas y un sinfín de dificultades, ya muy agotados ese décimo sexto día rompieron en júbilo al escuchar el grito de ¡Tierra a la vistaaa…!

A su desembarco encontraron un ambiente aparentemente apacible, apropiándose de un territorio que llevó por nombre “Isla Gasparilla”, el capitán Gaspar, sin embargo, ahora no entendía el porqué de las palabras de advertencia de su padre y se mantenía alerta.

Al día siguiente decidieron dar marcha a la búsqueda, durante su navegación hacía el punto demarcado con la ubicación, fue el teniente Cabeza de perro, quien alertó a su tripulación del avistamiento de lo que parecían ser leones marinos, les llamó la atención la vistosidad de sus poderosas colas que brillaban con color tornasolado intenso al sol y batían el mar a medida que nadaban a la par del navío, con un tamaño considerable de alrededor de unos tres metros y un aspecto agresivo y amenazador.

El capitán Gaspar envió a su tripulación en grupos para encontrar el tesoro, pero el terror le invadió cuando las aguas agitadas a su alrededor se tornaron de un rojo sangre, solo su teniente y un par de hombres regresaron la superficie colmados por el pánico, entre gritos exclamaban ¡sirenas!

Abandonaron la búsqueda, fue Cabeza de perro, sin embargo, quien entregó a su capitán la prueba de que habían encontrado el tesoro en ese día, un cristal ovalado en forma de huevo con extrañas incrustaciones preciosas, y marcharon de vuelta a tierra ensordecidos por el canto de sirenas, ahora José había comprendido, aunque muy tarde el significado de la advertencia de su padre, juró no rendirse en su ambición de obtener aquel tesoro que le brindaría la ¡vida eterna!

There were frequent stories in the city of Seville, about a great treasure with strange properties hidden somewhere in the depths of what is now known as the Gulf of Mexico in the new world, the corsair José Gaspar known as "Gasparilla", he grew up listening to these stories from his father Juan Gaspar, who claimed to know the secret that hid that mysterious treasure. When Juan Gaspar passed away, on his deathbed he gave José a letter, it contained the secret and the location of the treasure, as well as a warning about a great danger that anyone who embarked on it's search would face.

And so Gasparilla had found a real reason to undertake a long and dangerous journey to the new world on it's search and it's secrets, so he decided to gather his crew of 60 men, led by his lieutenant Lope de Aguirre known as "Cabeza de perro” and second in command, promising them endless riches in precious stones and gold, so that none could resist those promises, and undertake this adventure.

On June 19, 1710, aboard the ship "El Marigalente", Gasparilla and his crew set sail for the new world, sailing for 16 days in the Atlantic Ocean, going through violent storms, swells and endless difficulties, already very exhausted that sixteenth day they burst into joy upon hearing the cry of Land in sight...!

Upon disembarkation they found an apparently peaceful environment, appropriating a territory that they called "Isla Gasparilla", Captain Gaspar, however, now did not understand the reason for his father's words of warning and remained alert.

The next day they decided to start the search, during their navigation to the point demarcated with the location, it was Lieutenant Cabeza de perro, who alerted his crew of the sighting of what seemed to be sea lions, they were struck by the showiness of their powerful tails that shone with an intense iridescent color in the sun and churned the sea as they swam alongside the ship, with a considerable size of about three meters and an aggressive and menacing appearance.

Captain Gaspar sent his crew out in groups to find the treasure, but he was filled with terror as the choppy waters around him turned blood red, only his lieutenant and a couple of men making it back to the surface in panic screaming they exclaimed sirens!

They abandoned the search, it was Cabeza de perro, however, who gave his captain the proof that they had found the treasure that day, an egg-shaped oval crystal with strange precious inlays, and they marched back to land deafened by the singing sirens, now José had understood, although very late, the meaning of his father's warning, he swore not to give up on his ambition to obtain that treasure that would give him eternal life!
