The beautiful color of bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum)

Hello dear Hive community! I recently took advantage of the beautiful weather and went on a trip into nature. I found a very interesting berry which I would like to show you in more detail! The common name of this plant is bog bilberry and scientifically Vaccinium uliginosum.

Vaccinium uliginosum is mostly found in boggy areas in forests and generally in damp places. The flowering period is from May to June and the blue berries can be collected in late summer from August.

The berries are very similar to blueberries and also belong to the same genus (Vaccinium). You can see the differences to the blueberry when you see the flesh of the berries, because the color of the bog bilberry is lighter on the inside.

In the Middle Ages, the berries were used to make wine and are said to have an intoxicating effect. It was even used as a medicinal plant to treat diseases such as stomach or bladder problems. The berry is theoretically edible in small quantities, but you should be very careful because toxicity has not yet been researched enough and contains an unknown active ingredient!

By the way, the original home of Vaccinium uliginosum is Europe, Asia and North America. This plant is also widespread in the mountains of southern Europe and in Scandinavia.

I hope you like my new post, I captured the photos with iPhone 12.
