Here you can see pictures of evergreen, which is also known under the scientific name Vinca Minor and has its origin in Central as well as Southern Europe and it is believed that the Romans have helped to spread it more and more. Also the Roman scholar Pliny the elder described evergreen and in the Middle Ages it was considered a magical plant that can have protective properties and the wearing of jewelry from this plant was often used for ritual customs or to make wreaths from it that had a high symbolic power. Love potions were also prepared from the plant and jewelry from the leaves was of great importance, especially at weddings and was considered a symbol of eternal fidelity or it was also used as an oracle plant or burned for ritual purposes and people hang it on their door or planted it nearby to have protection and since the plant blooms pretty much all year round, it is also considered a sign of eternal life. There are assumptions that it was already used by the old Celts for ritual practices and also as a medicinal plant it had gained an important priority despite the toxicity and was used against various diseases and later the people went into more detail on the various active ingredients and began to extract them and even today it is used for these purposes and is especially found in ready-made preparations. The toxicity can be attributed to the over 50 contained alkaloids and it often happens that toxic plants are appreciated due to the healing properties and only in the correct use or dosage are of medical use and the plant can also be poisonous for birds or other animals. As always, I would like to mention that in case of illness, you should always ask your doctor or pharmacist of trust for the correct use to avoid side effects!
