A delightful perennial flower
I was outside today and took pictures of a very pretty flower, the name of the plant is bishopwort (Betonica officinalis). The bishopwort is perennial and surprises every year with its beautiful flowers! Mostly the flowers are pink, but there are also species with white flowers, which is rather rare. Bishopwort provides a good food source for insects, one of the pictures shows a bumblebee eating the nectar.
There are around 12 different species worldwide and the flowering period is from June to September. Betonica officinalis is relatively adaptable when it comes to its location, but the place should be sunny or partially shaded. Particularly humid meadows are good places to grow and you can usually expect a plant with a size of 50 to 70 cm.
It is very interesting that the bishopwort is considered a medicinal plant of the Middle Ages and antiquity. Already in ancient times, people appreciated the healing power of nature! The diseases where the plant is used include gallstone complaints, asthma, migraines and more. In the Middle Ages, bishopwort was considered a panacea against diseases.
I hope you liked my post, I used my iPhone 12 to take these photos!
Nice shots and a lovely bloom; based on its valuable ingredients, I hope it is still used medicinally today.
Thanks for your feedback dear @collinz. Today, Betonica officinalis is still used as a medicinal plant, but much less often. Since the 18th to the 20th century, the plant has been losing more and more medical acceptance. Unfortunately, many natural healing methods are being pushed out more and more by the chemical pharma industry.
