Freewrite - “Incapable of Doing Anything”
LIKE FAMILY INC was down to a workforce of a couple hundred AI agents and two human employees and everything was going really, really well.
It started with a general restructuring in keeping with current industry best practices etc. The first round of layoffs had been a depressing, tearful affair. The last rounds had been far less stressful for the new all AI HR department since they hadn't known any of the people they were firing and were incapable of feeling stress anyway.
The CEO was confused as to who authorized his own firing. He had been behind the push for “as close to full automation as legally possible” but obviously that mandate wasn't meant to include him! However by then the board of directors were all artificial intelligences as well so there wasn't much he could do.
Hope and Larry were the last two humans. Larry had passed away the previous week (a fact that someone with working nostrils would eventually figure out while walking past his apartment).
That left Hope. Sure, her co-workers mostly ignored her and believed her to be literally incapable of doing anything (even when her suggestions repeatedly turned out to be correct). But she remained the only reason they could legally claim to be a hybrid human/AI organization.
If they were capable of shock that's probably what they would feel when they learned she was about to quit.
