Freewrite - “A New Kind of Fuel”

The fuel was not good. It polluted the environment and the people who sought to control it were often the least capable of handling power responsibly. But bad fuel was better than no fuel in a world with so many wants and needs unfulfilled.

And the ‘better’ fuel was not always quite so good as advertised. Sometimes the damage was simply hidden further downstream, offshore or within someone else's borders. But the problem with living on a giant ball is that no matter how far away you push a problem, if you do it for long enough, you end up pushing it toward yourself.

The wise man had spent decades in the forest meditating alone, observing events unfold remotely with calm detachment. But perhaps the tiniest spark of attachment remained. A part of him still longed for a day when the rest of humanity would set aside all systems of consumerism and oppression. And in so doing they might discover a new type of fuel both infinite and inexplicable.

I'm not sure what the new type of fuel he had in mind was, mostly because I just wrote the story and haven't spent decades meditating in isolation, but I suspect it has something to do with enlightenment.
