And that’s exactly what I found in Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas, the first book in the Wallflowers series. I was only going to read the first one this season… but, minor spoiler: I read all five books in a week.

Imagine Bridgerton vibes, but set in the Victorian era. Each book tells a different story, but all the characters are interconnected, which makes the whole experience feel even more special. It’s a light, simple narrative, but incredibly addictive. I didn’t realize how much I needed this series until I finished the first book… in less than 24 hours.

Y eso lo conseguí con Secretos de una noche de verano de Lisa Kleypas, el primero de la saga Wallflowers. Solo iba a leer el primero en esta temporada… pero, pequeño spoiler: en una semana me leí los cinco libros.

Imagínate vibes de Bridgerton, pero en época victoriana. Cada libro cuenta una historia distinta, pero todos los personajes están entrelazados, lo que hace que todo se sienta aún más especial. Es una narrativa ligera, sencilla, pero increíblemente adictiva. No sabía que necesitaba tanto esta saga hasta que terminé el primer libro… en menos de 24 horas.

A quote from the book reads: “Annabelle was furious about the situation they found themselves in—and, moreover, with herself for not having been able to find a husband yet.” And it’s impossible not to feel a little lump in your chest when reading that. How sad to think that a woman’s worth could be reduced solely to her ability to find a husband.

Cansadas de la situación, de la invisibilidad, de ser descartadas una y otra vez, finalmente deciden hablar entre ellas. Y lo que empieza como una simple conversación… se convierte en algo mucho más importante. Descubren que se agradan, que se entienden, que comparten la misma herida.

Y así, estas chicas ignoradas por la sociedad encuentran algo incluso más poderoso que el amor romántico: la amistad. En ese pequeño círculo, en esa mesa olvidada, nace un vínculo que les da fuerza, apoyo y, por supuesto, una idea bastante clara: si nadie va a ayudarlas, entonces ellas mismas se conseguirán marido.

Each book in the series follows the story of one of the Wallflowers, in the order they themselves set to help each other find husbands. And first on the list is Annabelle Peyton, the eldest… at 25 years old and officially declared a spinster.

Her family’s situation is dire. After her father’s death, everything began to fall apart: they sold jewelry, furniture, stretched their money as far as they could… but bankruptcy is already knocking at the door. So Annabelle has a clear goal: to marry a man who can offer her financial stability.

Because in those days, options for a woman were practically nonexistent. They couldn’t study, they couldn’t work, they couldn’t support themselves. If she didn’t find a husband… the alternative was as harsh as it was simple: become the mistress of some aristocrat.

And that’s exactly where he comes in.

Cada libro de la saga sigue la historia de una de las Wallflowers, en el orden que ellas mismas establecen para ayudarse a encontrar esposo. Y la primera en la lista es Annabelle Peyton, la mayor… con 25 años y oficialmente declarada solterona.

La situación de su familia es crítica. This is basically love at first sight… but with complications, because otherwise it wouldn’t be any fun.

Simon meets Annabelle in the prologue and is completely smitten from the very first moment. But we’re not talking about an innocent glance… no, sir. We’re talking about such a strong impulse that he ends up stealing a kiss from her. And all these romances start like this: with questionable but intense decisions 😂

Two years pass between the prologue and the start of the story, and Simon is exactly the same: totally and hopelessly obsessed with Annabelle. Buuut… He’s a womanizer. He shies away from commitment. He doesn’t believe in marriage and reduces everything he feels for her to desire, to attraction, to something physical. According to him, that’s all there is to it.

Annabelle rejects him time and time again. Not because she doesn’t like him—because it’s obvious she does—but because she knows exactly what his intentions are. And she doesn’t want to be anyone’s mistress. She’d much rather have a loveless marriage with a man who doesn’t stir anything in her at all than live in that position.

🌷El romance🌷

Esto es básicamente un amor a primera vista… pero con complicaciones, porque si no, no sería divertido.

Simon conoce a Annabelle en el prólogo y queda completamente flechado desde el primer momento. Pero no estamos hablando de una miradita inocente… no, señor. Estamos hablando de un nivel de impulso tal, que termina robándole un beso. Y todos estos romances empiezan así: con decisiones cuestionables pero intensas 😂

Pasan dos años entre el prólogo y el inicio de la historia, y Simon sigue exactamente igual: total y perdidamente obsesionado con Annabelle. Peeero… Es un mujeriego. Huye del compromiso. No cree en el matrimonio y reduce todo lo que siente por ella a deseo, a atracción, a algo físico. Según él, eso es todo.

Annabelle lo rechaza una y otra vez. No porque no le guste —porque es evidente que sí—, sino porque sabe perfectamente cuáles son sus intenciones. Y ella no quiere ser la amante de nadie. Prefiere mil veces un matrimonio sin amor, con un hombre que no le despierte absolutamente nada, a vivir en esa posición.

If we look at the context of 1843, marriages of convenience were the norm. Love was almost a luxury, a fantasy found only in novels. So her decision, though painful, makes perfect sense. And it’s almost ironic to think that such a “refined” and moralistic society… was far more corrupt than it appeared.

But guys… I spent most of the book angry at Simon!

The guy is persistent, he’s clearly hooked, he wants to be close to her, get to know her, talk to her, buy her the world… and on top of that, he’s genuinely nice. But EVEN SO, he insists on wanting her only as a lover. Is it really that hard for him to ask her to marry him? 😩

She’s attracted to him. If he took that step, she’d accept. She’d get the security she needs, and he… well, he’d have her. Is it romantic? Not exactly. Is it practical? Absolutely.

Si nos metemos en el contexto de 1843, los matrimonios por conveniencia eran lo normal. El amor era casi un lujo, una fantasía de novelas. Así que su decisión, aunque dolorosa, tiene todo el sentido del mundo. Y es hasta irónico pensar que esa sociedad tan “refinada” y moralista… era muchísimo más turbia de lo que aparentaba.

Pero gente… ¡yo me pasé gran parte del libro enojada con Simon!

El hombre es insistente, está claramente enganchado, quiere estar cerca de ella, conocerla, hablarle, comprarle el mundo… y además, es genuinamente agradable. Pero AÚN ASÍ insiste en quererla solo como amante. ¿Tanto le cuesta mucho pedirle matrimonio? 😩

Ella se siente atraída por él. Si él diera ese paso, ella aceptaría. Ella obtendría la seguridad que necesita, y él… bueno, la tendría a ella. ¿Es romántico? No del todo. ¿Es práctico? Completamente.

🌷Characters🌷

Annabelle is an incredibly realistic protagonist: intelligent, determined, and very clear about what she needs. She isn’t an idealist, nor does she dream of perfect love; she seeks stability and money, because she needs them to save her family. In a society that already considers her “too old” at 25—with no dowry and labeled as nothing more than a mere ornament—her options are limited. And what’s most outrageous is that, although no one considers her as a wife, there’s a whole line of men waiting for her to become their mistress. Even so, Annabelle stands firm in her decision not to give in, proving that, even in a world that diminishes her, she’s determined to take control of her own destiny.

Simon, for his part, is a character who stands out immensely for what he represents. Although he can be emotionally exasperating, as a man he is fascinating: confident, direct, and proud of his work. Unlike the aristocrats who live on appearances, Simon comes from the middle class; he is the son of a butcher and built his fortune through ingenuity and hard work. He loves what he does, speaks openly about money, and embodies the shift of an era in which entrepreneurs are beginning to displace the old landowning nobility. And although many look down on him for lacking a title, the reality is that he is, without a doubt, the best catch of them all.

🌷Los personajes🌷

Annabelle es una protagonista increíblemente real: inteligente, determinada y muy clara en lo que necesita. No es idealista ni sueña con el amor perfecto; ella busca estabilidad, busca dinero, porque lo necesita para salvar a su familia. En una sociedad que ya la considera “demasiado mayor” a los 25, sin dote y etiquetada como un simple adorno, sus opciones son limitadas. Y lo más indignante es que, aunque nadie la considera para esposa, sí hay toda una fila esperando que se convierta en amante. Aun así, Annabelle se mantiene firme en su decisión de no ceder, demostrando que, incluso en un mundo que la reduce, ella está decidida a tomar control de su propio destino.

Simon, por su parte, es un personaje que destaca muchísimo por lo que representa. Aunque emocionalmente puede ser desesperante, como hombre es fascinante: seguro, directo y orgulloso de su trabajo. A diferencia de los aristócratas que viven de apariencias, Simon viene de clase media, es hijo de un carnicero y construyó su fortuna con ingenio y esfuerzo. Ama lo que hace, habla de dinero sin tapujos y encarna el cambio de una época donde los empresarios comienzan a desplazar a la vieja nobleza terrateniente. Y aunque muchos lo miren por encima del hombro por no tener título, la realidad es que él es, sin duda, el mejor partido de todos.

🪻Things I Liked🪻

What makes this series special is, without a doubt, Lisa Kleypas’s writing style: addictive, lighthearted, and perfectly balanced. She pairs charming male leads—the kind who captivate you the moment they appear—with strong-willed, sassy women who are ahead of their time. The stories are romantic, fun, and daring, without falling into unnecessary drama or complicated plots. Everything flows so naturally that you simply can’t put the book down.

Plus, it’s the perfect series to get you out of a reading slump: short, easy-to-read books with characters who constantly cross paths without ever getting repetitive. They’ll make you laugh, sigh, get emotional, and even shed a tear or two. It doesn’t try to be deep, and that’s exactly where its charm lies.

And yes, it’s spicy… but in a good way. One of the best “spicy” books I’ve read lately. Kleypas builds the tension between the characters, the desire, and the chemistry, so when the main event finally arrives, you’ve been waiting for it too. Nothing explicit or vulgar, but suggestive, well-written, and evocative enough to let your imagination do the rest.

🪻Detalles que me gustaron🪻

Lo que hace especial esta saga es, sin duda, la pluma de Lisa Kleypas: adictiva, ligera y perfectamente equilibrada. Combina protagonistas masculinos encantadores, de esos que te atrapan desde que aparecen, con mujeres decididas, pícaras y adelantadas a su época. Las historias son románticas, divertidas y atrevidas, sin caer en dramas innecesarios ni en tramas complicadas. Todo fluye de forma tan natural que simplemente no puedes dejar de leer.

Además, es una saga ideal para salir de un bloqueo lector: libros cortos, fáciles de leer, con personajes que se cruzan constantemente sin volverse repetitivos. Logran hacerte reír, suspirar, emocionarte e incluso soltar alguna lágrima. No pretende ser profunda, y justamente ahí está su encanto.

Y sí, tiene spicy… pero del bueno. Uno de los mejores spicy que he leído ultimamente. Kleypas desarrolla la tensión entre los personajes, el deseo y la quimica, por eso cuando finalmente llega el acto principal tú tambien lo estabas esperando. Nada explícito ni vulgar, sino sugerente, bien escrito y lo suficientemente evocador como para dejar que tu imaginación haga el resto.

Sometimes you just need a story that wraps you in its warmth. And while the book has many great qualities, the most important thing is the Wallflowers. “The Wallflowers had nothing to lose by helping one another, but so much to gain.” And that says it all. What started as a nickname meant to make them feel inferior ended up becoming their greatest strength. Their friendship, constant support, and sisterhood… that’s the true heart of the story. Because in the end, they are the real soulmates.

There’s a scene in this book that really touched me, and it isn’t even romantic. It’s a moment of them simply being young, playing, laughing, enjoying themselves, feeling free. And that’s when you realize that having a group of friends who are there for you, support you, and celebrate with you is one of the greatest treasures you can have.

A veces solo necesitas una historia que te abrace. Y aunque el libro tiene muchos puntos buenos, lo más importante son las Wallflowers. “Las floreros no tenían nada que perder al ayudarse las unas a las otras, pero sí mucho que ganar.” Y eso lo demuestra todo. Lo que empezó como un apodo para hacerlas sentir menos, terminó convirtiéndose en su mayor fortaleza. La amistad entre ellas, el apoyo constante y la sororidad… ese es el verdadero corazón de la historia. Porque al final, ellas son las verdaderas almas gemelas.

Hay una escena en este libro que me marcó muchísimo, y ni siquiera es romántica. Es un momento de ellas simplemente siendo jóvenes, jugando, riendo, disfrutando, sintiéndose libres. Y es ahí donde entiendes que tener un grupo de amigas que te acompañe, te apoye y celebre contigo es uno de los mayores tesoros que puedes tener.
