Waking Up and Struggling to Fall Back Asleep

avatar

It’s currently 2 a.m., and I still can't drift off. I’ve been having trouble sleeping for the past three days—or rather, I keep waking up and finding it hard to get back to sleep.

It all started last Friday night. I had gone to bed early, but I woke up at 11 p.m. because my son, Ade, was coughing incessantly. His cough grew progressively worse, to the point where we decided to take him to the doctor that very night, as he was in pain with every cough and his breathing had become labored.

After the examination, the doctor diagnosed Ade with an upper respiratory tract infection—specifically, a severe case of pharyngitis (sore throat).

Since then, I’ve had to administer his medication at 1 a.m. Fortunately, Ade’s condition has improved today, and his coughing has subsided. For the past few days, the coughing would flare up every night after 11 p.m., making it hard for him to sleep and causing him to complain of chest and throat pain whenever he coughed. The good news is that he rarely coughs during the day.

As a result, my sleep schedule has been completely disrupted for the last few days.

To make matters worse, today—Monday, August 17th—I’m attending the Indonesian Independence Day flag-raising ceremony at Renon Field. I just hope I have the stamina to stand through the ceremony in this hot weather and scorching sun.

Even though the ceremony starts at 8 a.m., the sun has been blazing hot early in the morning lately.

I really hope that after writing this post, I’ll be able to fall into a deep, sound sleep.

Your routine went upside down, but your body will adjust in time. While now it is not easy, I wish you good health and I believe that it will get back on track. Time is what the body needs to readjust from my experience.

I'm glad your son is feeling better. You sound calm now, but it must have been nerve wracking to have him cough like that. I raised two children and that means I had many sleepless nights. We feel powerless when our children are sick. I would stay up all night when they ran a fever and I'd wet them down with towels to lower the fever. My daughter remembers that and when her daughter was sick she did the same thing.

I hope your son continues to improve.

Ah man, insomnia is a tricky one to navigate. I’ve dealt with it since my age was in the single digits, and I’ve tried it all.

My best advice is tire yourself out, physically. It’s almost impossible to force your mind to rest, but at least for me, a tired body will help tire the mind once you’ve finally laid down. If you’re having trouble initially falling asleep, try distracting yourself from the intent by doing something like reading or listening to a podcast. A hot shower and white noise can also be your friend.

Unfortunately, none of those will solve the problem, but I’ve found they help. Avoid medications unless absolutely necessary. Hope you find some rest!
