Quiero compartir con ustedes una pequeña historia que recientemente tuve frente mi Xbox. Los que me conocen saben lo mucho que me gusta el mundo gamer y bueno, siempre pensé que grabar mis partidas de la Xbox 360 era imposible. Pero ya encontré una solución y espero poder reunir para compartir con ustedes una experiencia nueva. Les cuento, es difícil entender que quieren hoy los niños cuando se trata de un video juego, no lo sé, me imagino que con tantas nuevas modalidades aquella era de morir sin tener la posibilidad de guardar algún avance. ¿Se imaginan ir en el mundo 8-2 de Mario Bro de la NES y morir en el intento para volver a empezar en el 1-1?

I want to share a little story with you that happened to me recently while I was playing on my Xbox. Those of you who know me know how much I love the gaming world, and well, I always thought it was impossible to record my Xbox 360 gameplay. But I’ve found a solution, and I hope to put it together so I can share this new experience with you. Let me tell you, it’s hard to understand what kids want these days when it comes to video games. I don’t know I imagine that with so many new game modes, dying back then without being able to save your progress must have been the worst. Can you imagine playing World 8-2 in Mario Bros. on the NES and dying, only to have to start all over again at 1-1?

Pero compartir esa pasión con mi hija Luna no ha sido tarea fácil. Créanme, lo había intentado con otros títulos, de hecho con el mismo Mario Bros bajando un emulador de la NEs pero ninguno terminaba de gustarles, todos eran aburrido, complicados, difíciles, aburridos... Eso hasta que conseguí un nuevo camino en donde encontramos, BattleBlock Theater. Sin duda, el primer momento gamer con Luna. Por primera vez puedo decir que logré que Luna no solo se sentara a jugar conmigo, sino que realmente se divirtiera y se riera. Lo cual es una ganancia mayor. Verla reír frente al televisor mientras jugábamos cada uno de los niveles que hemos jugado hasta ahora es una experiencia hermosa que nos ha unido muchísimo.

But sharing that passion with my daughter Luna hasn’t been easy. Believe me, I’d tried with other games in fact, even with Mario Bros. itself, using an NES emulator but she never really liked any of them; they were all boring, complicated, difficult, boring… That is, until I found a new path that led us to BattleBlock Theater. Without a doubt, that was my first real gaming moment with Luna. For the first time, I can say that I managed to get Luna not only to sit down and play with me, but to actually have fun and laugh. And that’s the biggest win of all. Seeing her laugh in front of the TV as we played through every level we’ve played so far has been a wonderful experience that has brought us so much closer together.

El juego tiene una estética tan colorida, caricaturesca y cómica que atrae de inmediato. Sin embargo, no es mucho de mi agrado, pero haber conseguido un juego que pudiera ser Luna quien solicitara jugarlo, la verdad me gusta mucho. En este juego ha podido controlar más los saltos, medir bien la distancia al momento de saltar y no caer en algún precipicio además que se divierte mucho en ocasiones dice ella que sin querer, me empuja y suelo caer en alguna trampa. Y ahí es donde entra la magia y mi real desesperación ja ja ja…

The game has such a colorful, cartoonish, and comical aesthetic that it immediately draws you in. However, it’s not really my cup of tea, but the fact that I found a game that Luna actually asked to play I really like that. In this game, she’s been able to control her jumps better, judge the distance accurately when jumping, and avoid falling off cliffs. Plus, she has a lot of fun sometimes she says she accidentally pushes me, and I usually end up falling into a trap. And that’s where the magic happens and my real desperation, ha ha ha…

Hay momentos donde la coordinación nos brilla y logramos resolver los puzzles juntos. Pero hay otros momentos en los que Luna descubre que puede lanzarme al agua, o se queda atrapada en el mismo obstáculo cinco veces seguidas mientras el reloj avanza y que les puedo decir, en más de una ocasión he tenido que respirar profundo para no perder la paciencia lo que llamo un ejercicio de autodominio puro ja ja ja. Pero al final, ver su cara de emoción cuando logramos superar un nivel o rescatar a los prisioneros con los cristales recuperados, hace que cada caída a las espinas valga completamente la pena.

There are moments when our teamwork shines and we manage to solve the puzzles together. But there are other moments when Luna discovers she can throw me into the water, or gets stuck on the same obstacle five times in a row while the clock keeps ticking and what can I say? On more than one occasion, I’ve had to take a deep breath to keep from losing my patience which I call an exercise in pure self-control, ha ha ha. But in the end, seeing the excitement on her face when we manage to beat a level or rescue the prisoners with the recovered crystals makes every fall onto the thorns completely worth it.
