Hola, Hivers:

Hace una semana tuve una reacción alérgica y estuve mal... Ayer tuve una crisis migrañosa que me paralizó, literalmente. Tuvieron que llevarme a un dispensario médico para inyectarme varios analgésicos que pudieran calmar el dolor.

Hoy me hice varias pruebas médicas y mañana me toca hacerme otras más. La vida sigue a pesar del dolor que puedan generar las molestias físicas. Mi esposa está preocupada por los problemas de salud que he presentado. Por mi parte, creo que todos estos malestares son producto del estrés, de la preocupación por la falta de trabajo y varios problemas familiares.

Sin embargo, de las crisis surge algo nuevo, y cuando la crisis comenzó, pensé un poco en lo que se puede llamar como La inmortalidad del escritor. En la situación que me encontraba, se me vino a la mente lo que le sucedió al personaje de Las nieves del Kilimanjaro, donde el personaje, posible alter ego de Hemingway, en su lecho de agonía se da cuenta de que ya no podrá escribir todo aquello que deseaba escribir.

Un autor es recordado por aquello que escribe y publica; y luego sucede que se encuentra una novela perdida, cuentos incompletos, papeles dispersos... Y vuelve a revivir.

Pero de lo que no se escribe, es lo que no sabremos nada. Dentro de esas divagaciones, recordé un poema de Whitman en dónde decía que, aunque él, Walt Whitman, ya no esté físicamente con el lector, siempre estará con ese lector que lea sus poemas precisamente en esas palabras que el lector está leyendo, y que no importa la época, sin en un siglo o más de un siglo, él abrazará al lector y será su hermano. Whitman, hombre libre como pocos, estaba conciente de su mortalidad y de la trascendencia de sus palabras, y por eso hoy lo recordamos tan vivo y lleno de energía; y son sus palabras precisamente las que inspiran a cientos de lectores.

Pero si hablamos de inmortalidad y de escritores y personajes literarios, una novela que juega muy bien con esta dinámica es la del escritor checo Milan Kundera: La inmortalidad. Se podría decir que las novelas de Kundera son tratados filosóficos sobre tópicos como la vida, la creación literaria y la libertad, entre otras.

Pero es en esta donde aparecen dos escritores como personajes no físicos, por llamarlos de alguna manera. Estos escritores, además, nunca se relacionaron entre sí y tuvieron la particularidad de haber vivido en dos épocas distintas. Se tratan de nada más y nada menos que de Hemingway y Goethe.

En un punto de la novela, uno de ellos se cuestiona qué hacen ellos dos ahí hablando como dos buenos amigos si nunca se conocieron ni coincidieron en vida, a lo que el otro responde que en realidad ellos no están ahí, que son el producto de la imaginación de otra persona que los ha puesto en esa situación y por eso hacen todo lo que hacen y dicen todo lo que dicen.

Nosotros nos quedaremos con las dudas de si en realidad estaremos leyendo todo lo que ellos quisieron escribir o si acaso somos el sueño de un escritor enfermo, con migraña, inventando un ensayo a mitad de la noche.

Within these digressions, I remembered a poem by Whitman where he said that, although he, Walt Whitman, is no longer physically with the reader, he will always be with that reader who reads his poems precisely in those words that the reader is reading, and that no matter the time, without a century or more of a century, he will embrace the reader and will be his brother. Whitman, as free a man as few, was aware of his mortality and the transcendence of his words, and that is why today we remember him so alive and full of energy; and it is precisely his words that inspire hundreds of readers.

But if we talk about immortality and writers and literary characters, a novel that plays very well with this dynamics is that of the Czech writer Milan Kundera: Immortality. It could be said that Kundera's novels are philosophical treatises on topics such as life, literary creation and freedom, among others.

But it is in this one where two writers appear as non-physical characters, to call them in some way. These writers, in addition, never related to each other and had the particularity of having lived in two different times. They are nothing more and nothing less than Hemingway and Goethe.

At one point in the novel, one of them questions what they are doing there talking like two good friends if they never knew each other or coincided in life, to which the other responds that they are not really there, that they are the product of the imagination of another person who has put them in that situation and that is why they do everything they do and say everything they say.
