Tengo varios días que no escribo ni publico nada, y es que no la he pasado muy bien, pues tuve una reacción alérgica y aunado a eso, intoxicación y si le sumamos la migraña...

Por fortuna, la situación no fue grave y no tuve que quedarme internado en un hospital, pero sí tuve que quedarme tranquilo y cuidar mi alimentación. Con la migraña no pude leer mucho.

Sin embargo, hoy pude retomar una de mis lecturas, y ayer pude leer un par de cuentos cortos de Hemingway. Debo decir que sus cuentos gozan de cierta frescura por la forma en que narra. No se hacen muy pesados y puedes visualizar todo lo que el escritor se propone. Su técnica es limpia, rítmica y agradable.

Pero lo que quiero comentar es un pasaje de Mommsen que me llamó la atención, y es la siguiente:

La Roma de la monarquía, aunque allí estuvieran concentradas todas las magnificencias de los tres continentes, y por deslumbrante que estuviera de oro y mármol, ya no era más que una residencia real con su hospital de pobres, es decir, un mal necesario en el Estado.

Al leer esto, me quedé pensando un rato en la capital de mi país, y en diversas capitales del mundo... ¿Y qué son las capitales sino lugares con excelentes construcciones pero al mismo tiempo con una población muy pobre, convirtiéndose en un lugar incluso peligroso para vivir?

Yo no sé si Roma sea el modelo de capital para el mundo, pero sí tenemos en cuenta su influencia incluso siglos después de la caída del imperio romano, puede decirse que hay ciudades que han querido reflejar su resplandor. No obstante, leyendo a Mommsen, es lógico decir que no era un buen lugar para vivir, sobre todo porque a cada rato habían levantamientos y enfrentamientos entre diferentes bandos que detonaban en sangrientas batallas campales.

Ustedes dirán que soy un poco intenso al hablar de estas cosas. Y no es para menos, aún sigo bajo los efectos de los medicamentos, así que ya me voy a dormir. Les puedo decir, antes de irme, que me agrada compartir estas cositas que pudieran ser tontas, pero para mí son gratas perlas que se descubren en medio del desierto.

I can tell you, before I go, that I enjoy sharing these little things that could be stupid, but for me they are pleasant pearls that are discovered in the middle of the desert.
