A peek in my Sketchbook

avatar

Hi everyone! I would like to show you a few of my recent drawings in graphite and talk about my love for the medium which has done so much for me in the past and that allows me to imagine a future filled with arts.

If you haven’t drawn in a while, I suggest trying it and see if it brings you joy! If not, a plethora of amazing activities like yoga or cooking may make you happy. Perhaps there is something that did not do it for you some time ago but if you give it another chance, it can enrich your life forevermore.

Fight the negative self-talk, your doodle is going to look bad, there will be things that are wrong with it. You may be out of practice or have very little experience composing images with a pencil.

Laugh it off and really focus on the pleasure practice.

This is my bunny. I enjoyed working on it in two sittings, during private art classes with some amazing young students.

I used a photo reference.

It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

For some reason, you must draw the hair in the same direction it is going. Vary your marks, use a tilt on your pencil to get broader lines and find shadows that can push the form forward.

This is a little demo I did to show that seeing the gestalt, that is, everything as a single shape, makes for a better sense of negative space, both in the drawing and the artist. It makes the entire composition seem more grounded.

I often use a timer because of its numerous benefits to developing problem solving skills.

A student was too stiff so this was my way of telling her to mess it up, use more instinct. Don’t sweat the details, raw looks good, always.

With a bit more time, you can start to depict the side of the spoon with shadow and render the ledge of a bowl. Observe how the light hits this feature and avoid making things look paper thin.

More importantly, enjoy the looseness of the previous warm-ups, the boost of confidence from that little bit of practice. This is why in yoga, some instructors call for a difficult pose at the end, like an inversion. Because now, you are all warmed up!

It is such an honour to host HIM life drawing for gay men. It’s another thing off my bucket list if you ask me. I have to remember to be grateful about these things but this month trust me, I was. For having it be in person!

You heard that right, in person!

I love it, I just hope the Delta variant does not ruin all my dreams.

It was a video conference hybrid so hosting felt a bit surreal. I did my best to show the participants to each other from both the real and virtual realm and I even picked up the laptop to see some beautiful charcoals on newsprint lying on the floor.

This is the 30-minute pose, I’m pretty happy with it. It was a good time to be present and by then my faithful co-host Jeremy had come back from a meeting and was drawing with us. Jeremy is such a sweet heart, he was disappointed about the turnout from his event. I tried to cheer him up but I think I gave him too much advice, although he seemed down with it.

I find him quite handsome but he has a boyfriend. He once gave me a free life coaching session and it was great.

I really want to spend some time on a proper Splinterlands Art entry. If you wish to know more, they release a weekly contest on @splinterlands, I urge you to check it out!.

However, it takes work and these are only preliminary studies.

The one above with Medusa features one of my favourite Original Characters princess Nadia named after the famous Chrono Trigger character. She is of the royal house of Kai which rules over the continent of the same name. She ends up being adopted by the legendary hero Karon along with Medusa.

Anyway, I hadn’t thought about her in so long, I think I was 16 when I drew her in a mini comic and my classmates would peek over my shoulder.

The fishnets are inspired by Gamora, I used to love Adam Warlock and the Infinity Watch and it was likely to find entire runs in the discounted bin.

Splinterpirate.jpg

A lot of people think of drawing as a finished product but artists know in their heart that it is a process.

The beautiful Pirate Archer for example invited me to tackle a different while looking at the original for details and try to capture his attitude. How fun!

Thank you for being such an art tourist. I want to end by thanking @theycallmedan and the #iamalive community at large for welcoming me to IPFS vlogging with open arms.

Hive truly is a wonderful place for embracing content creators, let’s hope that we can find ways to get more eyeballs on this platform, especially 3Speak.

I am at a loss for words for the success of my last couple posts, thank you! This is unprecedented.

Remember, keep trying things that can bring you pleasure, especially those that precede computer tech, they are really worth it!
