El Puente General Rafael Urdaneta Cumplió 60 años
Cuando vamos a otro estado (no digo a otro país porque no he ido ni a Colombia que lo tenemos a 4 horas de aquí) y me preguntan ¿de dónde eres?, de inmediato respondo ¡del Zulia! y cuando decimos Zulia, se nos viene a la mente tantas cosas maravillosas que tiene este Estado, que bueno a pesar de no haber nacido en Maracaibo, me identifico un montón con algo tan memorable y reconocido a nivel internacional como lo es el Puente sobre el Lago de Maracaibo, Puente General Rafael Urdaneta.
Cada año el día 24 de agosto se celebra el aniversario de la inauguración del Puente General Rafael Urdaneta, ya que se inauguró el 24 de agosto de 1962.

El puente General Rafael Urdaneta o puente sobre el Lago, como es llamado localmente, cruza la parte más angosta del Lago de Maracaibo, en el Estado Zulia, al noroeste de Venezuela, y conecta la ciudad de Maracaibo con el resto del país. Fue nombrado en honor del General Rafael Urdaneta, héroe zuliano de la independencia de Venezuela.

Diseñado por el Ing Ricardo Morandi y posteriormente modificado por El Consorcio Puente Maracaibo "CPM" ( Precomprimido C.A.venezolana 50% participación y líder, Wayss & Freytag A.G. Julius Berger, Phillip Holtzman A.G el otro 50%), fue construido en concreto armado y pretensado y tiene una longitud de 8.678 m y 134 pilas. En su parte central el puente es del tipo atirantado, sus bases se encuentran ancladas en el fondo del Lago de Maracaibo, a una profundidad de 60 metros (para permitir que embarcaciones de hasta 45 m de altura puedan entrar al lago y luz de 235 m) y cuenta con dos carriles por sentido. Soporta un tráfico promedio de 45 mil vehículos diarios.
Según la publicación oficial del MOP 1962 y el Libro "El Puente Sobre El Lago de Maracaibo en Venezuela" Bauverlag GmbH, Wiesbaden-Berlin 1962 se emplearon en su construcción 270000 m³ de concreto, 35660 m de pilotes de perforación, 27170 m de pilotes de hinca de d=91.4 cm, 6260 m de pilotes de hinca 50/50 cm, 5000 t de cables de pretensado, 19000 t de cabillas y 2600 personas.

Es uno de los puentes pretensados más largos del mundo en su tipo y una de las mayores estructuras de concreto armado y pretensado construida en Latinoamérica. A comienzos del siglo XXI fue iluminado en sus seis pilares mayores, utilizando para ello 600 luminarias que pueden cambiar de color para poder ser contemplado desde la ciudad de Maracaibo; convirtiéndose de este modo en uno de los monumentos de luces más grande de América Latina y el tercero a nivel mundial.

Este puente permitió unir ambas orillas del lago y conectar de manera expedita a la ciudad de Maracaibo con el resto de Venezuela. Los proyectos iniciales para el puente fueron descartados pues se consideró que una estructura de metal requeriría mucho mantenimiento, dado el clima húmedo de la zona. Además de requerir poco mantenimiento, en Venezuela el cemento es un material menos costoso que el acero y mantendría los equerimientos estéticos de la obra.
El puente General Rafael Urdaneta es visto por los zulianos como un icono cultural y del desarrollo de la región occidental, esto es evidenciado en diferentes expresiones culturales de la música gaitera que hablan del "lago, china (referencia a Nuestra Señora del Rosario María Virgen de Chiquinquirá, denominada popularmente "la Chinita") y puente".
Como dicen los gaiteros:
"Sin La Chinita, Lago y Puente no habría Gaita Zuliana."
El Puente sobre el Lago de Maracaibo le han compuesto gaitas, danzas, poemas, suites; han sido crónicas o poemas que expresan la admiración de sus pobladores:
“Cuando el puente no existía
y el lago querías cruzar
te solías embarcar
en un ferry noche y día”
(Rafael Sánchez, 1987)
Ese tema lo interpretó Ozías Acosta con Gaiteros de Pillopo; “El ferry” se ha convertido en un clásico del género. En 1971, unos años antes, el país conoció una hermosa gaita compuesta por Norberto Pirela y Joseíto Rodríguez, es casi un himno, titulado “Sentir zuliano” grabada originalmente por el conjunto Los Caracuchos:
“Cuando voy a Maracaibo
y empiezo a pasar el puente
siento una emoción tan grande
que se me nubla la mente
siento un nudo en la garganta
y el corazón que me salta
sin darme cuenta tiemblo,
sin querer estoy llorando”

En 1972 esa gaita la grabó Ricardo Cepeda con Cardenales del Éxito y se consagró como éxito nacional, es parte de la banda sonora de nuestras vidas.
En 1965 Mario Suárez grabó una hermosa danza de la autoría de Jesús Reyes “Reyito” titulada “La guitarra de mi lago”, tema donde compara al puente ideado por el romano Morandi, con el diapasón de donde salen las notas:
“Te han cantado tantas veces
mi bello lago zuliano
que hasta el mismo faro indiano
zigzaguea en tu belleza.
Eres la reina sultana
de esta Maracaibo mía
con sol de cada día
te vez más venezolana.
Udón te llamó la lira
en su honda inspiración
y el puente el diapasón
donde el poeta se inspira”
(Reyes, 1965)
En conclusión, este majestuoso puente es una de las obras más antiguas e innovadores en América Latina, ya que su construcción y el trabajo extraordinario para su desarrollo, de ingeniería de precisión, han brindado al Zulia una obra y sobre todo un atractivo turístico del Zulia para el mundo.

The General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge or bridge over the Lake, as it is locally called, crosses the narrowest part of Lake Maracaibo, in Zulia State, northwestern Venezuela, and connects the city of Maracaibo with the rest of the country. It was named in honor of General Rafael Urdaneta, a Zulian hero of Venezuela's independence.

The central part of the bridge is cable-stayed, its bases are anchored at the bottom of Lake Maracaibo, at a depth of 60 meters (to allow vessels up to 45 m high to enter the lake and a span of 235 m) and has two lanes in each direction. It supports an average daily traffic of 45 thousand vehicles.
According to the official publication of the MOP 1962 and the book "El Puente Sobre El Lago de Maracaibo en Venezuela" Bauverlag GmbH, Wiesbaden-Berlin 1962, 270000 m³ of concrete, 35660 m of drill piles, 27170 m of driving piles of d=91.4 cm, 6260 m of driving piles 50/50 cm, 5000 t of prestressing cables, 19000 t of cable ties and 2600 people were used in its construction.

It is one of the longest prestressed bridges of its kind in the world and one of the largest reinforced and prestressed concrete structures built in Latin America. At the beginning of the 21st century it was illuminated on its six major pillars, using 600 lights that can change color to be seen from the city of Maracaibo, making it one of the largest monuments of lights in Latin America and the third largest in the world.

This bridge made it possible to link both shores of the lake and expeditiously connect the city of Maracaibo with the rest of Venezuela. Initial projects for the bridge were discarded as it was considered that a metal structure would require a lot of maintenance, given the humid climate of the area. In addition to requiring little maintenance, in Venezuela cement is a less expensive material than steel and would maintain the aesthetic equeriments of the work.
The General Rafael Urdaneta bridge is seen by the people of Zulia as a cultural icon and of the development of the western region, this is evidenced in different cultural expressions of the gaitera music that speak of the "lake, china (reference to Our Lady of the Rosary Mary Virgin of Chiquinquirá, popularly known as "la Chinita") and bridge".
As the gaiteros say:
*Without La Chinita, Lake and Bridge there would be no Gaita Zuliana".
The Bridge over Lake Maracaibo have been composed gaitas, dances, poems, suites; have been chronicles or poems that express the admiration of its inhabitants:
When the bridge did not exist
and you wanted to cross the lake
you used to embark
on a ferry night and day "

That song was performed by Ozías Acosta with Gaiteros de Pillopo; "El ferry" has become a classic of the genre. In 1971, a few years earlier, the country knew a beautiful gaita composed by Norberto Pirela and Joseíto Rodríguez, it is almost a hymn, entitled "Sentir zuliano" originally recorded by the ensemble Los Caracuchos:
When I go to Maracaibo
and I start to cross the bridge
I feel such a great emotion
that it clouds my mind
I feel a lump in my throat
and my heart skips a beat

In 1972 this gaita was recorded by Ricardo Cepeda with Cardenales del Éxito and became a national hit, it is part of the soundtrack of our lives.
In 1965 Mario Suarez recorded a beautiful dance of the authorship of Jesus Reyes "Reyito" entitled "La guitarra de mi lago", a song where he compares the bridge devised by the Roman Morandi, with the tuning fork where the notes come out:

In conclusion, this majestic bridge is one of the oldest and most innovative works in Latin America, since its construction and the extraordinary work for its development, precision engineering, have given Zulia a work and above all a tourist attraction of Zulia to the world.
