It has been some time since I had a copy in my hands, but it is something I will always keep in my memory. From the moment I opened its pages, I was trapped by Carpentier's lyrics. That man really knew how to tell a story in a completely exceptional way. He made you feel like you were living in the 18th century, with all its lights. I can swear I felt like I was walking the streets of Havana in those times.

Hace ya algún tiempo que tuve un ejemplar en mis manos, pero es algo que guardo siempre en mi memoria. Desde que abrí sus páginas, quedé atrapado por las letras de Carpentier. Ese hombre sí que sabía cómo contar una historia de una manera completamente excepcional. Te hacía sentir que estabas viviendo en el siglo XVIII, con todo y sus luces. Les puedo jurar que sentí como si estuviera paseando por las calles de La Habana de aquellos tiempos.

The story plunges us into the lives of fascinating characters, such as Victor Hugues, a French adventurer who arrives on the island and becomes a key figure in the Haitian revolution. And we cannot forget Esteban, the young Creole who becomes the main protagonist and shows us his experiences in that convulsed historical panorama.

La historia nos mete de lleno en la vida de personajes fascinantes, como Victor Hugues, un aventurero francés que llega a la isla y se convierte en una figura clave de la revolución haitiana. Y no podemos olvidarnos de Esteban, el joven criollo que se convierte en el prota principal y nos muestra sus vivencias en ese panorama histórico tan convulsionado.

What I love most about this novel is how the author is able to unite historical reality with fantastic elements. There are moments where you don't know if what is happening is real or a figment of the imagination. It's like a kind of Cuban magical realism that grabs you and makes you think about the complexity of life and human beings.

Lo que más me encanta de esta novela es cómo el autor es capaz de unir la realidad histórica con elementos fantásticos. Hay momentos donde no sabes si lo que sucede es real o producto de la imaginación. Es como una especie de realismo mágico cubano que te atrapa y te hace pensar en la complejidad de la vida y del ser humano.

I don't want to make spoilers, but I can assure you that "The Century of Enlightenment" is a roller coaster of emotions. There are moments of joy, sadness, surprise, love, heartbreak and everything that makes you feel alive. Besides, in this work they knew how to portray the society of the time, showing the contradictions and dilemmas of the main characters.
