Hello Everyone,

Welcome to Saturday Savers Club with Susie-Saver!

SPI Giveaway for September NO-BUY Month.

Every week during our September NO-BUY month we are going to have an SPI giveaway!

Last week, the giveaway was for your favourite NO-BUY or MAKE DO recipe. The winners is @justclickindiva with her amazing NO-BUY recipe for Curry Chicken Salad. Congratulations!

This week, what are your top tips for low-cost or no-cost leisure activities for NO-BUY month? When the children were small we used to let them on the computer to find something we could do as a family that wouldn't cost anything. They were very creative and came up with an event or activity every week that was easy to get to, everyone would enjoy and cost us nothing to take part in!

What ideas do you have? Let us know in the comments for a chance to win SPI!

What's been happening in your world this week? anything exciting or fun? Tell us in the comments - you could win some EDS tokens 😁.

More about EDS tokens

EDS tokens are a low-risk income token, ideal for people who want to save. There were only 20,000 originally and they were all sold at 1 Hive each, with guaranteed earnings of 12% each year. You can now acquire EDS tokens through the EDS Miner token.

Earnings come from powering up and leasing out the Hive that came from selling the tokens, plus earnings from posts and comments each week. EDS pays out every Monday evening. Last week the pay out was equivalent to 23%.

623 EDS Miner tokens left.

Back to business ...

We're going to be here every Saturday through the year growing a little savings honey pot, if you have plans for saving or getting to a different place this time next year - maybe $5 Hive by the end of the year 🤑?

Whatever it is, stick with Susie Saver through the year and we'll get there. Along the way, we'll share lots of tips and tricks for saving and how to get the knack of making your money work for you and not the other way round.

Let's Get Started

saturday_savers_club.jpg

We're using the 365 Penny A Day Challenge framework for the Saturday Savers Club. We're aiming to save £667 worth of pennies by the end of the year.

Penny a Day Tracker Sheet

Right click on the image, save it to your computer and then print it out.

Okay, let's check in ...

1. Check Progress

Each week, we're going to check in through this post and see where we are up to. Our target for today, 11 September, was 17.57p. Next week, we'll be saving 18.06p and by Saturday we'll have saved 340.68p (that's 34,068p just compounding a penny a day)! 😁.

Each week, I'll be buying Hive for @susie-saver's account with the pennies we've saved.

Here's this week's results - 17.57p buys 24 Hive.
894 Hive saved in 36 weeks (774 Hive powered up, the remainder invested in EDS and EDSM)! Plus we're earning 3.22% inflation on powered up Hive, 20% on EDSM, 23% on EDS tokens and a little on curating and posting!

@susie-saver has powered this week's savings; she's also been voting following a curation trail. She's reached her first milestones of 530HP and Minnow status. Her next goal is 1,000HP. She's already at 781HP - what's your prediction for when she will reach 1,000HP? Tell us in the comments!

How much did you save this week? Did you meet your target? Or did you save even more?

Being accountable to another person or a group is a great way to motivate yourself to save (or anything you want to achieve). Of course, you need the right kind of people around you - ones that think what you're trying to do is worth doing ... or at least fun 😁.

Sign up here with us to start your savings journey:

  • just leave a comment below if you want to join the challenge.
  • follow @eddie-earner so you never miss a post (Eddie has lots of ideas about how to make money - he's the earner, I'm the saver - you'll like his posts).

2. The Golden Pig Tip

saturday savers club.jpg

Image by 3D Animation Production Company from Pixabay

Every week, we're going to share a Golden Pig Tip for saving. By the time you've tried them all you'll have £670 saved.

This Week's Golden Pig Tip

This week's Golden Pig Tip for September NO-BUY month:

If you want to avoid buying anything, remove temptation!

  • Unsubscribe from all those emails from your favourite stores, clubs and causes that want you to BUY things from them. Don't even look - don't even have those emails in your inbox. If you want to go hard core, remove cookies from your computer. That will cut down customised ads popping up (yarn, in my case) when you're reading the news or checking your mail. Those flyers for takeaways, clothing catalogues and spend-£80-on-Waitrose-groceries-and-get-£10-off? Put them straight into re-cycling.
  • Stay out of shops, shopping centres, designer outlets, cafes (unless it's for your pre-agreed, included in your allowable expenses, outing to meet friends) and museum and art gallery shops (my downfall). Don't go there, don't look, don't buy!
  • I get most of my food delivered mainly from small, local businesses and a single top-up delivery each month from a mainstream supermarket. In each case, I check the minimum purchase required for free delivery and limit my order to that. I'll stack the basket first and then cull anything that isn't a priority until I am down to the threshold. For example, the local wholefood co-op has a minimum order of £30 for free delivery. As ASDA (Walmart) now charges for picking and delivery, the wholefood co-op has become competitive in addition to being environmentally friendly and workers having control of their work.

September NO-BUY Challenge

How's your month going? Have you worked out your list of buys and no-buys? Anything that hasn't worked 😁? Learned any useful tips for saving money? Let us know in the comments 🙂.

And today is always a good day to start saving - you can start on Day 1 or make up the first thirty-seven weeks (or join the Autumn Challenge) to catch up with @susie-saver.

That's it for this week. Hope you've enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you next Saturday with progress so far and our next Golden Pig tip.

Greetings savers,
I’m grateful for the coins 😎I really need to wheel and come again (regroup /plan and strategize) in order to get back on track for this no buy September. I didn’t do well at all last week. KFC saw me once or twice. We fall down but we get up. Those 500 yens should be bearing fruit in short order. I’m
Planning what to do with them next. 🙌🏿 Have a great weekend everyone.

Mello @missaj, good to see you - no-buy is harder than you think, I've discovered the same! It's good practice, though, by week four I will know what I'm doing.
Look forward to hearing about the 500 yens :)

Hello @missaj. Thanks for your progress report on your Week 1. You know, we all fall down because none of us is perfect. But the good thing is that we all can get up if we choose to.

I remember being in Weight Watchers many years ago. They taught me not to beat myself up about a setback. Acknowledge it, promise to do better the next day, week, or month, then move on.

Eating out one of 2x a week is not that bad. Did you list this as an acceptable expense in your No-Buy Plan? If not, then do so knowing that you may want to go out. I've discovered that limiting something we are used to is better than cutting it out completely. To me, that causes increased craving for the item UNLESS you can really do without something. Then again, we are only doing this initially for 30 days.

But the thing is you have to have a plan. I'm constantly reviewing my DO's and DONT's to see if I really put that on the list :)

You're doing good so far. It's only been one week. Don't let a setback deter you from moving forward into Week 2 with confidence.

Take care.

Yay, thank you for my winnings! (pats the Wheel of Names)

For free and low cost things to do, a good place to check in my city is Denverite's weekly list of "things to do in Denver this weekend" - many are not free, but many of them are, so if there's something going on like a free festival or free admission day to the zoo or the art museum or something, they'll list it there. Another good resource is the Denver Library, which offers a state parks pass with your library card, or passes to the museum or theatre!

I am about to do my savings deposit and write my post for the day, but I have still been plugging along on my savings challenge. My rent is about to go up by A LOT soon, I just found out, so I might need it for that. Hopefully Hive moons? That would be nice.

Hello @phoenixwren. I see you week was steady. It usually happens..that annual increase in housing. That's one thing we rarely plan for because we don't know the exact amount. That's where savings come in handy. Although it's been hard to save an excessive amount these past two years for me since retirement. Being on a fixed income doesn't give you much flexibility. Sometimes relying on your already saved amounts is key. But that approach can vanish quickly.

Hope all works out well for you.

Take care.

Price hikes in essential items are a challenge, especially on a fixed or low income. The word here is substantial price hikes in energy prices this winter - one of the reasons I've been looking at where I can cut out unnecessary consumption of electricity.

Lots of great ideas for looking around for free stuff, too, thank you :)

Here's to Hive mooning!

Funny what you said about food delivery service. I did just that yesterday.

I ran out of some Trader Joe’s Basics but every time I go there I end up with all these extras that add to my bill and sugar consumption.

So I ordered online and got it as close to $60 as possible to get the free delivery.

Trader Joe’s is usually a 200-300$$ trip.

For me TJ's is (when there wasn't a 45 minute line wait due to covid restrictions, where I pretty much stopped going) an in-and-out store. I grab three or four items and leave. I experimented a little when they first came to town but had an allergic reaction to a lot of it, and bad experiences with others (mold in goat milk, mold in pub cheese, plastic in chicken breast... ). So my mainstays there are pretty much: instant coffee, milk, croissant dough, rice cereal, powdered sugar. I almost never get anything else there, but I might grab a cocoa or regular sugar or black beans or something if I happen to be going for something else. I avoid their produce section because it's all overpackaged, huge quantities meant to feed a family that is too much for me (and all that packaging waste drives me crazy). Oh, and flowers. I buy flowers for the altar there. I can't imagine spending hundreds, but I know people do it, judging by their loaded up carts at checkout!

0

avatar

Its all that family sized overpackaged produce.

And their cookies, and pineapple juice, and bagels and whipped cream cheese along with their locks and arugula, feta, and beets. Ground pork in perfect one pound squares, along with their fat noodles, and pasta sauce. 3 in one shampoo/body wash (what's that third thing) their shampoo and conditioner...

I also tend to get frozen fruit, mini cones, vanilla ice cream and an assortment of crackers.

Olive oil, coconut oil.

Shoot, I buy a lot of stuff there. And I love their flowers but the usually don't fit in my cart. LOL

Hello @metzli. I have never invested in food delivery services. I like to see the items I purchase, especially produce. But you are right, every time you go for specific items, you always end up throwing extra stuff in the basket.

I love Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. There are just items there you can't find at other local grocers. I didn't know $60 was the threshold to receive free delivery.

Thanks for sharing your experience with them.

$60 is the threshold for Inperfect Produce or imperfect foods.

I havent tried them before, this wednesday will be my first.

I do love getting Blue Apron boxes and am trying hello fresh this next week.

The kids love them.

I've heard of Hello Fresh. I think I've seen them in my grocers' ready-made foods section. But they are a bit pricey.

OK, thanks for the information.

I agree about fresh food, I prefer to check myself what I'm buying. I find the deliveries really helpful for the non-food, usually bulky household items, that are routine purchases - toilet tissue, cleaning products, that kind of thing. I budget to the last penny and I'm not doing the work of lifting them into the cart, onto the checkout, back into the cart, in and out of the car ... one of the lovely delivery drivers does that and they are all so nice and friendly!

Great minds think alike! It was different pre plastic payment methods: I would make a list, work out roughly how much it would cost and only take that amount of cash to the store. Nowadays, it's very easy to buy things.

I like the deliveries (if it works for you and what you want to buy) because you get the chance to review the total and then throw things out your cart (can you imagine doing that at a checkout hehe)?

You might well achieve the biggest savings this no-buy month!

Ah - hahahaha. I HAVE taken things out at the register. It makes my kids cringe.

15.00 for grapes? Put them back!

LOL.

I also take things out as we go around the store.

Did you just hit your sister?
Guess we don't need these pop-tarts. LOL.

But, I stopped doing that when covid started. Now I don't touch things unless I absolutely know they will end up at my house.

You are right. I am saving all kids of money. Guess who made the kids forage the fridge instead of ordering pizza last night?

My no buy is going pretty good, but I have not seen any new tokens that have me jonesing to buy, so that is a big help. I have my BRO tokens up to 10 now. This week I was able to get to 9 on my EDSM, and boost my APE to 7. I was even able to add a little bit more to my ARCHONM token.

I am pretty happy that my EDS are up to almost 12, (I have 11.99). So a little boost from Leo rewards, and SPS rewards, and I had a good week.

Congratulations on having a good week token wise and your no-buy.

Thanks for sharing.

For a smallish account like mine, it is hard getting the miners, they are so expensive seeming, but I know ground floor is where I want to be, I was one of the lucky that got some real cheap,(expensive to me at the time), ArchonM. I saved and scrimped, and had 7 at one point, sold 3 when price was real high, (good profit), and got my big bee badge from the sale and then power up of the Hive it brought in.

Congrats to this week's winners. Savings this week are not that much, but every bit helps. I ordered my boots ... And put the HBD I didn't need back into the savings. That's my savings for this week. 😊

And oh, I started using my crypto debit card for a 1% cashback. So let's see what I can make of that with the necessary spending.

I'm using the "Ruby Steel Metal Card" from crypto.com. The 1% cashback is in CRO tokens. And once I have enough, (which will take me a while), I can stake them to get even more cashback.

Hello @hetty-rowan. Thanks so much. Great that you put the HBD back into the savings. I'm trying to take advantage of the HBD 10% interest and save as much as I can.

I haven't heard about a crypto debit card. That's interesting. My daughters will be curious about those. I'll check it out.

Thanks for the info. Have a good Sunday.

Hello @eddie-earner and @shanibeer. How did things go this week in Saturday Savers Club land? I had a pretty decent week myself with a few ups and downs along the way. Here's my Week 37 progress report for the Club:

https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@justclickindiva/week-37-fall-is-approaching-and-holding-steady-in-week-5-of-the-autumn-savings-challenge-or-saturday-savers-club

Thank you so much for the SPI and my win in the Week 1 of the No-Buy Challenge. I was thrilled to see more SPI Tokens in my Wallet. It's always a good feeling to answer the call of a challenge and see my efforts pay off. I appreciate the support of the Community.

Also, congratulations to @phoenixwren and @missaj for your wins in the Wheel of Names spin.

@susie-saver, how impressive: 894 Hive saved in 36 weeks. You're on a roll with your diversifying how your account participates in various Hive incentives.

I love the Golden Pig Tip for this week. Yes, definitely, I have to remove temptation from pop up ads for new commemorative coins and other antiques. They are my downfall. Going shopping doesn't bother me because I rarely go these day; not because of the temptation to buy but because I can't walk long distances with my knee arthritis. When I do go, it's for something specific. My specialty is window shopping with no intent to purchase!

Hope everyone had a good week. Have an even better rest of your weekend.

Take care, and stay safe.

Thank you. I was so proud of myself upon writing my report yesterday.

Then, got up on this Sunday morning and first thing I see on T.V. is an add for a new commemorative coin. This one is so tempting because it's a new 2021 $2 Silver Round. Oh, it's beautiful. Only $39.99, but on special. I wrote the 1 800 number down and the website.

I'm not going to buy this month. I placed the info in my Oct. file. Only 18 days to go. I can wait. I know I can! I know I can!

Well I had a headache for the past few days so I caved and bought some take-out. It wasn't the best but I didn't want to deal with cooking when it got a bit annoying.

For low cost activities, I suggest watching some free stuff or play some online games together. It might use up some electricity but if you pick from the free stuff, it isn't that expensive.

Although my internet connection and the constant blackouts that I am experiencing They do not allow me to participate in the comments like weeks ago, I tell them that I have kept saving, my rewards They have been used to save them and to send my daughter's account @fabianar25 who is also saving. We already have about a month in the club, where we save every week.

This is the month of not buying, and although I need a lining to protect my cell phone, because I dropped it and broke a little, however it is an expense that can wait, and that my savings continue to grow and withdraw them when it is the right time to see my savings.

Hello @shanibeer and all the Saturday Savers Club members. I'm here to give you some tips that worked for me in providing low or no-cost alternative to having family fun.

The Beach.
Who doesn't love a trip to the beach. And it doesn't cost you anything, except for fueling up the car to make the trip. Having a day's fun at the beach is perfect for the kids. As far as I know, there are no entrance fees to visit the beaches. You may encounter parking fees. As far as food goes, you can take your barbecue pit or prepare your own food and have a cookout or just a family eat out. The children are more interested in the water. You'll be hard pressed to get them to come out.

City Parks and Neighborhood Playgrounds
Most cities have public parks that include large playgrounds. The more updated ones include water slides. Neighborhoods are adding more local play areas. Parents can sit and relax on the seating provided while the children play. And they're close to home. Most importantly, they're all free to use.

Public Zoos and Aquariums
For a nominal fee, these indoor and outdoor zoo parks and indoor aquariums are fabulous and a learning experience for both adults and children. Some facilities host "free days". Just check your local listings.

Children's Museums
Check these out to see if you have one in your area.

Other Museums for Entire Family
Art and Science Museums have "free visit" days for the entire family. Other times, you may be required to pay a fee for entrance. I purchased for my family an annual family package. It includes unlimited access to to all the museums available, such as science and arts.

Go Bicycling, Trail or Nature Walks
What a great way to have family fun. Bicycling is a fun exercise activity for the entire family.

Farmer's and Other Markets
Visiting a farmer's market is fabulous. The other type markets are the flower gardens. These type places can teach children about fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants, and trees. The workers can help children identify various products. They can also teach them how the items are grown.

At Home Games
Numerous board games you can create yourself by printing them free from sites. My family would print off Tic-Tac-Toe; print and color mandalas and other images. We would then have a contest to see who created the best design.

I hope you've been able to get some ideas.
