Market Friday in Saint. Lucia, the Lesser Antilles

(Edited)

Saint Lucia. She is just so incredibly beautiful. She sits in the Caribbean Sea, all 27 miles (43 km) and approximately 14 miles (23 km) wide of her. The capital is Castries, known for palm-lined Vigie Beach and port of call for many cruise lines. The island nation gained independence in 1979, but remains a member of the Commonwealth.

IMG_6856.JPG

These are the Pitons Mountains, a major hike and attraction in Saint Lucia. They are located in the south of Saint Lucia near the towns of Soufriere and Choiseul, which are on the southwestern coast. They rise up with pride. It is about two hours, give or take a bit, I believe that was in its entirety. Nice view from there! Feel free to hike it, it's free! Welcome to #MarketFriday! We will find something that you can buy!

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

IMG_6685 mf.JPG

Saint Lucia has some of the prettiest beaches in the entire Caribbean, especially Anse Piton. Did I happen to mention that somewhere along the line, importing the fine grains of white sand from Guyana has probably helped it along the way? Is this cheating? The beaches in St. Lucia are open to the public for free!

IMG_6941 mf.JPG

Lucia - Poverty and wealth. There is little drastic poverty in St. Lucia, but there are clear differences between a wealthy minority, a comfortable middle class, and a poor lower class. With per capita income estimated at approximately US $8790 in 2020, the island is at times, one of the more prosperous in the Eastern Caribbean. This is largely due to the success of the banana industry during the 1980s and the early 1990s, and continues because of the tourism industry. Many rural villages in banana-growing areas have solid housing and expensive imported vehicles, signs of the banana industry's economic impact. But there are also many smaller farmers, some with as little as an acre or two, who have not shared in the benefits of the banana boom.source

IMG_6715.JPG

In contrast, the wealthy minority in St. Lucia are situated in the plush residential developments to the north of Castries, around which many tourist resorts are to be found. Here, shopping malls, golf courses, and marinas testify to a luxurious lifestyle. Those who are richest in St. Lucia are white-collar professionals such as lawyers and doctors, local managers of foreign companies, and people connected with successful tourism ventures and private sector construction. Included in this employment sector are a large number of European and American expatriates (citizens who moved from their native country to live in St. Lucia). The island's middle class is composed of urban professionals and those involved in traditional retail, while in the countryside there are many owners of large farms who have made enough money to consider themselves middle class.

IMG_6691.JPG

Primary education is free and compulsory, but poor families often find it hard to afford uniforms and school books for their children. Medical care is available throughout the island, but doctors charge for visits and prescriptions are expensive. Housing conditions vary enormously, from the luxury villas of the island's northern tip to the ramshackle villages of the eastern coast.source

IMG_6917 MF.JPG

This is where I stayed when I went to Saint Lucia. It is proper middle class, I rarely will stay in a resort... almost never. It has nothing to do with the affordability and everything to do with visiting a country that is not my own. How will you ever know the people, the culture, share anything with another human being? I haven't stayed at a resort since I was a teenager, maybe even 20. When I decided to see the real world, it wasn't at all like the travel brochures. So, I will never go back to the resorts, unless I am looking for that kind of pampering, but, I can do that back home. I feel like I am wasting time if I don't get out and glad-hand with the locals! How about YOU? Do you like to be pampered or do like to get out and see what it's like...or maybe even a mixture of both?

IMG_6777.JPG

Major shopping here, in Castries, the capital. Very many local farmers, at the side of the road selling their produce, coconuts, whatever they have.

IMG_6933mf.JPG

EC =The Eastern Caribbean dollar- the currency of all seven full members (and one associate member) of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. How much is the food in Saint Lucia? I had to use the expatistan prices to get the 2021 prices, about as current as I could get. I imagine they are higher now than they were at that time. I thought they were quite high now, just thinking that they are probably even higher now. Yikes!

Basic lunchtime menu, drink included in the business district EC$50 ($18)
Combo meal in fast food restaurant (Big Mac Meal or similar) EC$25 ($9)
500 gr (1 lb.) boneless chicken breast EC$16 ($5.93)
1 liter (1 qt.) of whole milk EC$10 ($3.83)
12 eggs, large EC$9 ($3.51)
1 kg (2 lb.) of tomatoes EC$12 ($4.33)
500 gr (16 oz.) of local cheese EC$31 ($12)
1 kg (2 lb.) of apples EC$23 ($8)
1 kg (2 lb.) of potatoes EC$10 ($3.52)
0.5 l (16 oz) domestic beer in the supermarket EC$3.00 ($1.11)
1 bottle of red table wine, good quality EC$40 ($15)
2 liters of coca-cola EC$4.92 ($1.82)
Bread for 2 people for 1 day EC$2.46 ($0.91)

IMG_6947 mf.JPG

In the front of your house, on the side of your street, any place that people will walk by. That is the best way to sell your market. In such a small island, you have to carve your niche early on or be left out.

IMG_6937 mf.JPG

I rented a car and no surprise, British rules, and cars. I am okay with that, but, I did spot a couple of Yankees on the road some days. :) The island is very tiny and the gap is wide between the have and have nots. However, unlike some places, I never felt out of place, no matter which side of the fence I was on. There was proper respect for each. I don't want to feel guilty if I have money and I don't want to be made feel out of place when I don't.

IMG_6734.JPG

He made a comfortable living playing for the tourist who came to enjoy this scenic outlook. He was personable and interesting, giving history about the island and tips on what to see or avoid. He never asked for a penny, he just simply played and sang, enjoying the good life. People tipped him, some did not, but, he never said a word to guilt, anyone. Which was unusual.I have to wonder how he is surviving with the tourist trade gone.

IMG_6723.JPG

Another overlook into a neighborhood on the beach. Oh, the rough life, yes? It is a mixed neighborhood, meaning the less than rich were here first and others moved in but did not edge out the others. I liked the equality here. You are not better than me because you have more money. It works nicely for them. It is called respect one another.

Please remember, when you get to traveling again and stay somewhere for longer than a day. Bathe yourself in the richness of the culture. You won't find it in a hotel or resort, but, you may find it at an airbnb. You want to know the real people and the real country? Get out of those places and you will find what is so magic about it!

Please leave the link to your post here so it can easily be found by others. It helps you and me to have them in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much for joining us!! ❤

I am very exited to hear that in the local area they live is equality. I guess It is one of the most peaceful places for people to enjoy life.

I know! Not quite so equal, but, definitely more so than most places I see. I would say that they live harmoniously is more like it. I stayed in a lower to middle-class place and it was clean, the food was great and the people were amazing. That and the fact that I never felt intimidated with crime, something that happens in other places.

I believe it comes from being happy, which so many of them seem. It is always a good visit there.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words! I hope all is well with you!

This is so much beauty to behold, I can see that most of the houses were painted in various colors with the green shade of tress that makes everything serene and colorful.

Its good that the beeches are open for free and anyone can go for relaxation.

That banana bloom reminds me so much about my village here, we grow bananas and have all year supply.
Not to talk of mangoes, cashew, plan fruit and other plantation, I wish I can go home soon to bring us a post about what I have in my country home too

Making Education free is one of most kind gesture that any government can give its people, education can kick illiteracy and hence poverty from any country to raise the peoples standard of living.
How I wish that people can reach out to those kids with the books and items they need for proper studies.

Often times I like to mingle with people that make me feel welcome no matter the class they belong and yes I do like to feel pampered once in while but I don't want to miss out of the fun and social life between the locals, such beautiful tradition and culture plus local food that I truly relate with...

That's an awesome post from you and it was interesting to relate with St Lucia.

Thank you! I would love to see your village through a post, I find that the real pieces of culture are so much better than going to the resorts in a different country. I would never have gotten to see and experience it the way that I have. Local people don't have a class, although like you, it is almost invisible to me, it is part of the cultural flavor.

Oh, yes! Being pampered is fun, and that is great. I just don't want to miss out on street dances, festivals, or shopping in a local market for it! :) I can get pampered at home.

Education! Oh, yes. I couldn't agree more. The only way we are going to fight illiteracy and poverty is through education. I am so happy to see how important it has become in your country with your generation. May this make for a better life for all. I am so glad you enjoyed the post. I hope you are having an amazing day!

I noticed the people there have a fair complexion or shall I say brown. Does this place is not that cold or just a good climate? Poverty is everywhere but the income is not that low. Maybe the living expenses there are expensive.

Hey there denise.

The living expense is high for the wages, in my opinion. Just look at the prices I pulled up here That seems like it would be a tight budget and many more people do not get that kind of salary.

The weather in the Caribbean is nice, all year round. November is the hottest month in St Lucia with an average temperature of 28.5°C (83°F) and the coldest is January at 26°C (79°F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 10 in March. To me? Perfect weather all year round. Poverty is everywhere. When I see how much things cost there, it surprises me, but, their biggest industry nowadays is tourism; clothing, assembly of electronic components, beverages, corrugated cardboard boxes, lime processing, coconut processing.

Looks beautiful. I've never been there but looks like a place I would like to visit. The Pitons Mountains are quite unique. You don't see mountains that steep and pointy very often. I bet it would be a good hike.

It is a great hike! You go through the forest and it was a couple of hours. It was definitely felt the next day! I have never seen mountains that are this steep without a range. :) They are very distinct in their looks and you can see them for miles. It is a peaceful, gentle place. I actually didn't really show off the beaches which are beautiful, some of the prettiest, but, I wanted the focus to be on other things. Perhaps, I will do another post down the road that focuses on the beaches.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words! It is always a pleasure to see your comments.

Resort life is nice, don't get me wrong. I just don't like to do it the first time I go somewhere, because in all honestly, the Resort Life isn't real. It is never anything like the country, the people, the food.

Resorts usually import their staff from somewhere else and hire trained chefs to cook. You could go to a resort almost anywhere and never really know what country you are in, including your own. :)

I still go there and don't go to the resort... although, the resort is amazing, as most are. You should have that experience, it is something you will never forget. On the other hand, I see you doing exactly what I do, diving right into the local culture.

Booya!

That sounds fair - to immerse in the people and the culture, to be in the thick of it, to stay at an Airbnb :D

I love the houses, that pic with them on the hill is so colourful... :D

Looking at the price list, it looks expensive but of course, I am multiplying it by 4 since my currency would be RM4 to $1... but still...

Enjoyed this trip with you ;D

I have to agree with you. For the people earning the subpar salary, it is a hardship in my opinion, but honestly, they are so kind and sweet-natured, you would never know it. Jumping into the deep end and landing straight onto the culture train is the only way to really feel the way of life. I wouldn't do it any other way.

I love the pops of color on the hilltop also. Such a happy place to tie your anchor to for a bit. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words. It is always a pleasure to see you!

Absolutely! The Piton Mountains are so unusual looking and it is a pretty nice hike, especially as you are going straight through the forest to get there. Isn't the view spectacular?

I love jumping right into the culture. Why visit somewhere if you are not interested in it? You do it right, in my opinion. I hope you are doing well and that life is being good for you! Thanks for stopping by, it is always nice to see you!

The people doing V2K with remote neural monitoring want me to believe this lady @battleaxe is an operator. She is involved deeply with her group and @fyrstikken . Her discord is Battleaxe#1003. I cant prove she is the one directly doing the V2K and RNM. Doing it requires more than one person at the least. It cant be done alone. She cant prove she is not one of the ones doing it. I was drugged in my home covertly, it ended badly. They have tried to kill me and are still trying to kill me. I bet nobody does anything at all. Ask @battleaxe to prove it. I bet she wont. They want me to believe the V2K and RNM in me is being broadcast from her location. And what the fuck is "HOMELAND SECURITY" doing about this shit? I think stumbling over their own dicks maybe? Just like they did and are doing with the Havana Syndrome https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism

The Caribbean has about 700 Caribbean islands, but only 28 of them are sovereign states and dependent territories. Theses are the 12 Caribbean countries: Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

To be fair, they are all beautiful and the people are warm and wonderful! Respect. That is what I am talking about. If we had more of that, the world would be such a different place.

Education is the key to the success of a nation. Poverty would all but disappear with illiteracy.

I know! Some (mostly all) are very small, but, independent nations. Poverty coexists with nature in the most beautiful way. Nature doesn't know the difference.

Such beautiful pictures, but for me, the one with the signpost, it's something else, I guess it's the colors in it, but I love it. The houses resemblance a lot of those we see in Aruba and Barbados, very pretty to see. I live in Venezuela, and those prices are kind of high in comparison to ours, the eggs are more expensive but the coca-cola is not, so, point for Saint Lucia!! Very lovely post, as always!

I remember that you are from Venezuela! I hope all is going well with you!

The signposts they have in certain places are always fun. I love to see how many miles Japan or New York City is. :) The house reminds me exactly of Aruba and Barbados. I cannot believe how long it has been since I have been there. I blame it on covid! ;)

I was staying in Columbia when Covid 13 was closing our borders and had to get home or be shut out of my country. Yikes! Despite the poverty, the prices are quite high I think, and even higher now. Of course, everything is out of control.

The Caribbean and most of South America are lovely. The people are warm and friendly, making me feel welcome wherever I go. Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words and dropping your link! I am sure I will enjoy it, I always do!

Nice peaceful place overall. I was wondering how COVID-19 is going on there.
Seems they are not spared. https://www.covid19response.lc/
As compared to Tonga in another part of the world which only got hit when they started receiving aid after the volcano eruption.
Sorry, came in late to link up.

Not to worry, Ace @ace108 Yours came in just as I was clicking on, so I did it on the spot, after so many times of being so late, you deserved it.

The virus has a sneaky way of getting around the world. I feel like we are in recovery mode until it spikes somewhere. But, they are starting to really throw caution to the wind and open up things. That was horrifying about Tonga! That is sort of what happened to the whole Caribbean.

Thanks so much for participating in the challenge!

It is an interesting culture, probably more so being there and feeling the warmth of the people that surround your heart, giving you reasons to extend yourself to them. It is with joy that I jump right in, to the middle of their culture and so many others. It is the only way to truly enjoy the beauty of it.

It takes me less time to get there than it takes you to get to Virginia. :) Maybe that will make it a little easier for you to jump in too.

I want to thank you for taking the time to stop in, leave your comment and drop your link! Thank you!

Wow what an incredible trip! So many wonderful sights to see. I’m with you — I like to be out and about. But I do love some pampering too. There is something incredibly exotic about getting a massage in a gorgeous tropical setting.

I squeezed my post in! https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@jayna/market-friday-the-cutest-coffee-shop

Thank you for hosting Market Friday!

That is a good way to balance it. There is always time for ourselves. I love to be out and about and get to know all about where I am. It is half the fun of traveling the world, learning new things.

Thank you, lovely lady, for your sweet comment and for dropping your link! Much appreciated!

Another great market friday @dswigle I sadly didn't have time this week to do one, but next week!

When I travel I don't like upmarket hotels that much either, I prefer to let a house in an area I like and feel I'm 'living there'. I do belong to a club in London (tho I've not been a few years now thanks to our New World) and when there it's lovely to be in the center of things, but it still has a 'homey feel'.

The colors here are so amazing, it must be a wonderful place to be and the disparaity of haves and have nots I fear might be coming for more of the world over the next few years.

I do love being in the center of things, but, maintaining a homey feel and that is challenging, so I am so glad that you are able to!

I fear the same and hope that things will get better instead of worse. I never thought they could get as bad as they are now, never dreamed it in a million years.

Never worry about not doing one, #MarketFriday will be here when you are ready!

Do you like to be pampered or do like to get out and see what it's like...or maybe even a mixture of both?

A mixture of both! That's what I like and I think that's normal, to know both realities. Anyway, I'm not looking for anything beyond my level of life, I don't want to lie to myself, even for a few days.
On the other hand, I would not like to travel to places where poverty is evident. Now that the standard of living has risen in Romania and many have become rich, I have friends, in fact, acquaintances, who now go to Zanzibar, Bali, and tell of the poverty in those beautiful places. I would never want to go there, even if someone would pay for me.
St Lucia also has a beautiful name and gorgeous terrain and a fitting introduction from you, thanks for letting me get an impression of a place I will never see, but neither will it see me.

Sometimes, like Bali, you don't know until you get there just how much poverty there is. The truth of some of it is that we see poverty much differently than they do. The islands are filled with poverty. There is nowhere to escape it and if you don't have money, jobs are scarce, and there is usually is no place to earn, hence, poverty.

I can find poverty here in the States because I know where to look for it. It's everywhere. but talking about poverty in the Caribbean is a tricky issue because it's hard to know what is being used as a reference. There usually is a stark line of demarcation between the lifestyles of the local population and the lifestyles of the tourist population, compounded by the often conspicuous consumption found at the larger, more luxurious resorts. Many Americans go to the resorts and never leave them, most people that are cruising the Caribbean only go for a couple of hours on each island, not enough to learn anything about the people and truly not enough time to see the poverty.

It's also important to keep in mind the different values that Americans tend to put on possessions versus other cultures. Yes, there's a lack of material wealth at a quick glance, but the surface hardly ever tells the story.

Good grief, I rambled so much, I forgot what you asked me! :)

You tell a great truth, poverty is seen differently depending on the culture and history of the respective populations. Like happiness. I've read that the happiest people are the inhabitants of islands that don't have much... wealth certainly doesn't bring happiness.

Absolutely! I hope that will happen... I know it will happen. I was beginning to worry that we would never get to travel again, but, only for a moment.

My hope is that normal will move through the world. It must. Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words.

Thank you for this very complete tour of this beautiful Caribbean island. It is within the group of islands that are "near" Venezuela. It looks a lot like Trinidad, but this island is greener in its vegetation and more colorful in its buildings. And yes, as it is common in our countries, you can find street vendors everywhere. There is no need to take a car and go to the market. Sometimes with a walk through the neighborhood you can buy whatever you need. Those pictures of the fruit sales reminded me a lot of Venezuela with its informal sales of mangos, avocados, tomatoes, bananas and many other things on the streets.
I loved what you mentioned about the waste of time and money that means staying in a luxurious resort or hotel whenever you travel. That implies that you have to stay all day at the hotel to enjoy the money you are paying for and you miss out on getting to know the place you are traveling to. In my case, the most important thing when choosing a hotel is that this has to be cheap, clean and close to the center and commercial area of the city and with easy access to bus or subway. Nothing else.

I have spent all of my free time traveling the Caribbean and South America (along with living in Europe for a while) The one thing I can say is that I am the same. It is not that I don't like pampering myself, but, I truly enjoy diving into the middle of the culture and enjoying it. I have never seen happier people than when I visit people that don't have too much but that inclused all, although I do think of Americans, but, the world has beocme Westernized so, everyone for that matter.

There are times where being Westerniize is a good thing, but, not when I am visiting someplace that the very fact is not on their radar. I feel like when you take those all inclusive deals at the hotels, you get to enjoy the beauty, so sometimes, I understand it being enough. That is what they are looking for. Each of us is different. I would miss out on the culture, the people... the feeling that surrounds it.

There is nothing wrong with either way, but, I have loved getting to know our world.
