Un cumpleaños inusual, y lo celebré, ¡feliz! [ESP-ENG]

I’ve always liked preparing to celebrate another year of life; that date is the most important one—my birthday. I feel like it’s a way of saying to the universe, “Hey, look! I’m proud of the life I’m living, even with all its successes and failures.” I thank God for giving me another chance, and through the many experiences I’ve had, I’ve learned to enjoy today, the present, the moment.

On that special day, I’ll give myself a hug, say hello to myself, smile, and try to make every second a special moment to enjoy, because it’s an important day—the day I was born. I no longer wait for anyone else to plan and celebrate it, or to make me happy. That said, whoever happens to be there at that moment will enjoy it with me.

And for me, celebrating will mean toasting to myself, spending time with myself if that’s what I choose, enjoying time with my pets, having a cup of coffee, sharing a meal with the people I love—or even taking a trip to Paris. That will be priceless. Talking about my birthday means reflecting on the past, remembering the moments I enjoyed with my parents and family members who are part of my story.

This one is a bit unusual, because I have two dates. Until I was fifteen, I celebrated on September 25, until my father said, “Doryta was born on September 20 at 3:45 p.m.” I don’t remember exactly why he made that clarification. That’s why I celebrate for almost the entire month of September. For cultural or family reasons, some people may not like to celebrate their birthdays, and everyone has their own reasons; I’m on the side of those who do celebrate.

I really enjoy the preparation for that moment; even if it’s just having a delicious cup of coffee with a slice of cake, that’s wonderful—a time when emotions will play a pivotal role. I believe that whatever each person decides to do will always be the best choice; let’s just put our hearts into it, and it will be beautiful. That decision is a matter of free will.

I consider myself a detail-oriented person. Whenever I set out to do something, I make sure to check what I’ll need for its preparation, what steps to follow, the materials required, and, of course, a positive attitude to ensure the process is a complete success. And speaking of preparation, I couldn’t help but think back to my recent birthday, as I celebrated sixty-one years of a happy life on Sunday the 20th of this month.

I never imagined that this particular year would be marked by a beautiful wedding—that of my brother-in-law Silverio’s niece, the wife of my sister @mafalda2018. A few days earlier, I found out that the party program included a birthday greeting from me, alongside a cousin of the bride, who was also celebrating her birthday.

I packed my suitcase; I was excited, since I hadn’t been to Cumaná since January, and in recent years I’ve celebrated my birthday with my family. I tried on several dresses and chose one that matched a pair of gold Italian-style sandals that barely fit in my suitcase—because we tend to pack half the house when we travel, well, most of us women do; I’ll tell you more about the sandals later.

Wow! How exciting! I arrived in Cumaná on Friday the 18th, had a delicious cup of coffee with Mafa—who was also the wedding godmother—and we went over the details of the big day. On Saturday the 19th, I woke up excited, and with coffee in hand, we got right to work. Incredibly, the power didn’t go out that day—and we were on edge, wondering, “Will it go out or not?” It didn’t, even though it rained early in the afternoon; we had coffee and finished “dressing up,” making ourselves beautiful in true Venezuelan style.

We went to Santa Inés Church; it was beautifully decorated. And while we waited for the bride to arrive, my “Italian” sandals didn’t seem to be too happy with me—they were talking to me in Italian, and I pretended not to notice. And it was understandable—I hadn’t worn them in a while, let alone high heels; they were pinching me on one side, and a few minutes later, on the other.

Oh, my goodness! I prayed to heaven that the bride would show up soon; when I saw her, I took a deep breath, and as she climbed the steps—to top it all off—my brother Manuel said as he entered the church, “These sandals won’t get the better of me.” The homily was one of the most beautiful I’ve ever heard. The priest is a close friend of the bride and groom; it was something really special—wow! And the Hail Mary—needless to say—I even felt like getting married all over again.

Seriously. Believe it or not. And when the priest said, “Stand up!”—oh my goodness! The Italian women were giving me sideways glances, and I was thinking, “Calm down, it won’t be long now!” I almost walked into the reception hall barefoot—the decor was stunning, every detail, especially the newlyweds’ area; by the way, Mafa created the arrangements that adorned the tables; they turned out beautifully. Sister, may God continue to bless your talent. The service was personalized, with a consistent level of hospitality, and I sat down to wait for the bride and groom to arrive; by that point, standing was already painful; the Italian women were stepping on my feet.

And the bride and groom arrived! What a thrill to see two young people looking at each other with love and admiration—that’s beautiful. I wish them all the best in the world and hope they can live their lives in harmony, with great respect, understanding, and maturity; may God bless their union.

Well, after the toast, the mini-dance party got started, and I’ll tell you that halfway through, the “Italians” and I decided to go our separate ways—they were upset with me, and I was upset with them; I danced barefoot until dawn, and even though my feet hurt so much they almost felt like they were on fire, I’d stop to rest them for a bit and then keep dancing. And right at midnight, the singer and the guests congratulated me on my birthday and wished me all the best.

I enjoyed that party until dawn; I thank God for so much. I arrived home barefoot. After a wonderful night out and having slept only four hours, I enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee. That same day, on my birthday, I returned to my sweet home in Barcelona, since my cats were waiting for me. On the way home, I celebrated with a friend who gave me a tail and several people I knew—and some I didn’t.

Without a doubt, sometimes we don’t plan things and just enjoy them to the fullest. The rest will follow.

And the most touching moment was seeing the couple with their little dog cradled in their arms, a faithful witness to their great love. She goes with them to Mass every Sunday.

Dear friends at #Empowertalent, I had an unusual, different, spectacular birthday—and I celebrated it happily! I didn’t have time to plan my birthday as I usually do, but I did get ready for the big party and celebrated twice over, and I welcomed the 20th by celebrating my sixty-one years of happy life.

For some people, preparing for or celebrating another year of life may not matter; for others, it’s a way of telling the universe, “I’m alive,” and it will be deeply meaningful. Either way, let’s do it our own way and be happy—and ideally, let’s enjoy every step of the process and put our hearts into everything we do.

Give it your all because, in the end, that’s what will be etched in our minds and hearts as an indelible mark—and that’s what we’ll remember.

The wedding was spectacular; you could tell the preparations were made with care and affection—every detail, every gesture. The bride and groom went to every table to let everyone know how important they were to their celebration, and two days after the event, they called me to ask how I’d felt and what I’d thought of it. That really makes the guests’ attendance worthwhile. I also thanked them for the thoughtful gesture of singing “Happy Birthday” to me at their wedding.

Well, even though my birthday was unusual, and I celebrated it—I had a fantastic time, I was so happy!—even without sandals, and since nothing will ever be perfect, next time I’ll try them on beforehand; just in case the same thing happens again. Although I realize that the years won’t pass in vain and my body will undergo changes.

The Italian sandals are still in my suitcase; at first they wouldn’t fit, and now they refuse to come out. But, with or without them, I had an unusual birthday, and I celebrated it—I was so happy!
