I believe that three-quarters of the world’s population has taken on responsibilities—or “burdens”—that weren’t theirs to bear; some even stopped living and enjoying their lives, but others regained that ability—and I include myself in that group because it happened to me more than once. I congratulate the remaining quarter because they learned to be happy with what life threw their way; they didn’t let themselves be manipulated and were clear about which “balls” were their responsibility.
Over time, I’ve worked to join this group, but even if we don’t want to, every now and then—if we aren’t careful—we might find ourselves back on the other side. For this reason, it’s important to carry our own balls to avoid emotional imbalance; otherwise, we could become ill.
I reflected on how many balls I caught that weren’t mine and how many of my own I handed over. It’s important to always keep in mind that responsibility is non-transferable. And sometimes we’ll take on someone else’s responsibility without even realizing it; in fact, we might even see it as normal—until one day we say, “Anja! What happened here? Because we took on roles that weren’t ours and also gave away our own.”
And that will involve a range of options, from getting up at the time others want us to and putting our own activities on hold to do theirs. A while back, there came a point when I said, “Enough!” The neighbor with whom I used to chat over coffee had a new ailment every day, and I’d accompany her to the “Luis Razzetti” Hospital in Barcelona—it’s about 50 meters from her house. They were even about to give her a free pass, Venezuelan-style. Her daughter is out of the country, and her other son lived in Maturín.
If she was breathing and I wasn’t there, something would happen to her, and she’s the kind of person who’ll ask for a favor—but right now! You know? I mean, really! I felt overwhelmed; I had no time for myself. It was just too much, and eventually her son moved in and took care of her.

Llevé a casa mi primer perro, ¡wuao!
When I was ten, my mom taught me a valuable lesson. I brought home my first dog—wow! He was beautiful, and of course, logic told me I was responsible for him, but I was just a kid, and since I had to study and go out to play with my friends, by the time I got home, Mom had already done the work that was my responsibility: cleaning up the poop, among other things. But still, every morning I showered him with kisses and played with him; I love pets.
A few days later, my mother told me: “Doryta, that little dog is entirely your responsibility, and this responsibility is non-transferable; for this reason, you can’t give that ball—or any other—to anyone else, unless some unforeseen event beyond your control were to occur, and in that case, we’ll be here to support you,” and that event helped me mature and grow emotionally. Currently, I have cats as my pets, and I care for them with my whole heart, soul, and spirit.
And we’ll see these “balls” in every area of our lives—will they be small, medium, or large? The size won’t matter; rather, by taking on the responsibility of something that won’t belong to us, we’ll be losing a part of our lives—and worse still, when we feel guilty for failing to respond to other people’s “balls.”
No guilt—learn to say the magic word
Human beings will take on burdens that aren’t theirs—sometimes because they haven’t learned to say “no,” that magic word spoken without remorse or guilt—and doing so will be vital to seeking and achieving happiness, peace, tranquility, and quality in our lives. In my case, the things that cause me stress affect my colon; therefore, I take care of my health and my peace of mind. That’s why I shifted my focus and learned to say no.
Wow! Once we learn to use it, it can work the greatest magic—sometimes leaving us amazed by its benefits, especially on an emotional level; it will work like a kind of magic wand.

Sometimes we’ll feel guilty because we’ll forget to remind ourselves not to take on other people’s burdens. Some people will find all sorts of ways to set off alarms; but according to them, we’ll be the ones to blame, and they’ll come to us with a straight face and say, “It’s your fault I didn’t take my pill and felt sick”—it’s crazy; you know what I’m talking about.
I think everyone has their own way of dealing with things, since they’ll approach it from their own perspective on life.
Helping Without Losing Sight of the Big Picture
Helping others carry their burden every now and then isn’t a bad thing, but I do so with the firm conviction that, in the end, they won’t be on our side. I won’t lie to you—sometimes I’ll forget this, since it’s been part of who I am—but I’ve learned not to get too carried away, and at this stage in my life, now that I’m sixty, even less so. The moment someone threatens my peace of mind, my tranquility, and the direction of my life, I’ll say “bye,” “goodbye,” “sayonara,” or “arrivederci” to maintain my peace of mind.
For our own sake, let’s not take on burdens that aren’t ours, because otherwise, in the end, life will pass us by, but we won’t pass through it. Simply because we won’t allow ourselves the time to focus on ourselves.

Dear friends at #Empowertalent, sometimes we’ll be juggling so many “balls” and passing them back and forth that we’ll lose sight of enjoying what’s truly beautiful and important in life. And in my opinion, if we don’t keep this in check, we’ll end up feeling guilty for not having drawn the line in time—the line that no one should ever cross.
And this will most likely even make us sick; it won’t be easy to let go of and hand over the “balls” that don’t belong to us, even though doing so will heal our hearts. But we’ll be so absorbed in our daily activities that we’ll sometimes forget to give them back.
The human mind is a bottomless well, and each person will act differently depending on their circumstances and outlook on life—and it will also depend on the upbringing they received. For that reason, it will be necessary to teach at home which burdens to take on and which to let go of—that each person must take responsibility for themselves; this responsibility is non-transferable—and that will help strengthen the individual and foster personal growth.
It’s never worth losing sleep over things that aren’t meant for us. Dear readers, doing so will be both fair and necessary to protect our peace of mind. The truth is, giving those things back will bring us so much happiness that we’ll grow emotionally; our circumstances will change for the better—I guarantee it! I invite you to work on this. It will be a daily battle, and it won’t be easy, but it won’t be difficult either.
Have you ever wondered how many burdens you’re carrying that aren’t yours—and that are preventing you from being happy? Do you think it’s time to return those burdens to their rightful owners—and also reclaim some that we may have forgotten? Would you like to put the magic word into action?
Well, if you said “yes,” I congratulate you—and welcome to the club!
Life is beautiful and fleeting, and it’s a waste of energy to go through it trying to please people just to be liked or accepted, because no matter what we do, there will always be critics. We need to cultivate self-esteem and self-respect, because it’s one thing to be empathetic—which is a wonderful virtue—and quite another to let people walk all over us.

I say goodbye beautiful people, thankfulness is the north. Have a happy and blessed day.
