The ancient National Archive and the Post and Telegraph House of Peru

One of the great advantages of walking through the historic center of Lima is that you can often find old buildings and others that may not be old but were built with colonial inspiration, the truth is very rare to see buildings with modern architecture, of course, I refer in this case only to the historic center as in other districts if there are modern buildings.

Such is the case of the General Archive of the Nation, formerly called Archive of the Nation and currently located in one of the areas of the former Post and Telegraph House of Peru, this building is not one of the oldest, but gives us a nice view with its construction inspired by Renaissance reminiscences.

I love the uniformity in its windows, the upper ones are clearly distinguished from the lower ones, but from my point of view this does not break the harmony, however, it is inevitable to see some differences in the windows that follow after the main entrance and this is probably because we are talking about a building that shares headquarters with another institution.

The great arch that you will see below is not exactly the actual entrance to the Archive, in fact, you can clearly see that it is closed, but we must highlight the four large columns and four small ones that seem to majestically support this arch that proudly displays the coat of arms of the flag of Peru.

Trying to observe what is beyond the arch, we can see that inside there are several cubicles that according to what the guard told me, were dedicated to the sale of stamps and mail related material, as you can see is no longer in operation and in fact can be seen dirty and lacking maintenance.

As I said before, the Archive shares space with the former Casa de Correos y Telégrafos del Perú (current Casa de la Gastronomía Peruana), but at a certain point it seems that they tried to separate colors and styles, in fact, it is noticeable that the Archive has a more applied maintenance and apparent physical changes. In the following photo you can clearly distinguish the buildings mainly by color, one with a color that looks like marble or the other pink (or at least that is what my eyes detect).

I really liked the metal clock that I imagine served to keep the mail users aware of the hours and the limits of delivery of correspondence, at the top you can see the word "Mail". At the time of my visit it was not in operation but physically it is in good condition.

In the former Casa de Correos y Telégrafos del Perú we can observe greater details in its construction, the walls have a relief like staggered and the style in general seems to be more classic or old, the color, the small decorative columns and the sculptures in the superior part that seem to watch the entrance to the one that today works as the House of the Peruvian Gastronomy.

It has four entrances, two metal doors and two wooden doors perfectly separated, at the top of each of them there are windows and also rustic metal lamps in perfect condition.

In the central part of the building we can observe a perfectly centered clock, the national coat of arms of Peru and a metal plate which right now I do not remember what it said; there is also a metal sculpture with a figure that seems to be that of a lion or mystical being.

The place was closed but I managed to take this picture in which we partially see the internal part or reception, it is perfectly clean and with adequate lighting, on the ceiling there is a relief that denotes a great level of detail and beauty. It would have been great to be able to enter because at first glance you can see that this place has much more to offer, maybe I can do it in a next opportunity.

Hi @dinaaczib, what an amazing building and with a lot of decorative elements, no doubt a great job by the architect in designing every decorative detail, the floors and walls of the building look very clean. The clock on the sign gives a great style to the post office.

Cheers!
