Dos de Mayo Square, a monument for heroes

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

I have been passing by this place for a long time and the truth is that I had never stopped to appreciate it, I had noticed that it was an important place for the city, but the heavy traffic, amount of people and the hustle and bustle of everyday life, does not allow you to stop freely to detail the interesting things of this place; but today I decided that it is time to share with this community the wonders of the Plaza Dos de Mayo in the city of Lima.

When I say that it is a busy place is because this square also serves as a kind of traffic circle that gives access to important and busy avenues such as Avenida Oscar Benavides (Old Colonial Avenue) that goes in the direction of the Constitutional Province of Callao; Nicolás de Piérola Avenue that goes towards the Historic Center of the city of Lima and finally the super important Alfonzo Ugarte Avenue, this even passes under this square subway; additionally there are only a few shreds in which you can only walk, that is to say, there is no vehicular traffic.

As you can see in the following photos, the center of this square is adorned with a pedestal on which there is a large column of what appears to be marble in which there are five sculptures of characters that frankly I do not know who they are, not being originally from this country there is much of its history that I do not know. Regarding the sculptures, there is one with wings at the top and four more in the lower middle part pointing north, south, east and west respectively; the column is called "Great Column of Victory".

Something that I found very interesting about this square, is that it is surrounded by eight buildings of similar construction, all are about three floors with terraces and the same color, but some have a different construction in the windows, especially those of the terrace. By the way, I could notice an element of architecture in the terraces that I do not know, and it is that it calls my attention that gray structure at the top, is it perhaps an attic, well, what I can notice is that it is not a floor itself.

On the second floor of these buildings there are different businesses mainly dedicated to the trade of musical instruments, it is impressive the great amount that there is and it is precisely this site is famous and known in Lima for being the destination of those who are dedicated to music. There are also grocery stores and stores dedicated to the sale of food.

Another element that I would like to highlight is the landscaping that surrounds the large marble column, with bushes that have small pink flowers that make a great contrast with the color of the buildings; in addition, it is noteworthy that the walkway is quite wide, it is made of terracotta-colored bricks.

According to what I read in an article in the newspaper El Peruano, this square was built as a monument in honor of the heroes of the battle of May 2, 1866, then it had some modifications until it reached its current state. The buildings surrounding the square were built in the French Renaissance style.

I recorded a video so you can appreciate in more detail the elements of this square, I had to lower the volume of the ambient sound because the noise of the cars was deafening, I think this is one of the places with more traffic in Lima and the circulation of vehicles in this area seems not to stop. Thanks for your visit and support, greetings!

Renaissance architecture is very sober and at the same time beautiful. I have noticed that in Lima there are many structures and buildings with colonial and other periods' styles, this gives beauty to those areas of the city and makes them places of interest.

Yes, the truth is that there are many structures here, this happens a lot in the center of Lima, it has a European feel. It is very nice and elegant, there are still many places like this to go, I hope I can do it.
Thank you very much for your support and appreciation friend. A hug

Hi @dinaaczib, taking pictures in crowded places is a bit complicated, I have had to wait several minutes to take some pictures and when I think I have the perfect shot several people appear that I didn't see coming because I was concentrating on the picture he, he.

These buildings have a beautiful design and details that make them very striking, Peruvian buildings contain many decorative elements.

Happy Monday!

Lima is very beautiful, it has squares and a lot of architecture inspired by Europe, in my opinion.

How nice those sculptures and the square, the video was nice, I felt like I was there.

The truth is that the beauty of the streets of Lima is impressive and today you have put it in evidence with this post. Without a doubt I must say that I liked the redoma, but what captivated my attention completely were the buildings that were seen in the background with that Renaissance style and that are also very well maintained. I really liked your post.

Me gustó mucho tu post.

Yes, my friend, the truth is that there is a lot to enjoy here, many European airs and when it is winter this side looks more like Europe, it is nice to enjoy these buildings and keep those photos as a souvenir.

You Rockkkk 👍😎🔥📷💖!!!

This work reminds me a lot of the one in Mexico City that is shown a lot in soap operas or series when they are made there. It is very nice and you can see that it is very busy at the vehicular level, plus they have it well maintained, it's super cool!

Very interesting about the buildings that surround the small square, the quantity must have some meaning, I relate it to the cardinal points and their unions with the other points (Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest...) without a doubt it is a way of location, like a giant compass. I read the story and it's very cool and corroborates a bit of this I say!!!!

I loved the video Dina, that column with those images is imposing, it is a piece with an incalculable historical value, I congratulate you for having shown it in the video to detail it better!!!!

A great job, no doubt it is a place that deserves attention for its historical value and also for its design that evokes the best times where art was worked in an amazing way... I send you a big hug and thank you for sharing your adventures in the city of Lima.... You Rockkkkk!!! 👍😎🔥📷💖

I hadn't thought about it but it has a lot of similarities to several places in Mexico, I don't know if there are as many as here but they have a lot of similarities.
To me the historic center of Lima is one of the things I like the most here, very beautiful buildings and it is inevitable not to be delighted with them, curiously people are often surprised that it is Lima-Peru, and the truth is that here there is much beauty.
Thanks for your kind support dear friend.
