My culture my pride:Love for my Indigenous Language.(My Language My Identity)
Today I was just thinking about my life, and the part of it that makes me special 🥰 yeah special, I realized that have took a decision in life that others couldn't, and the tend to take me and call me a village girl, but I still took my stand(love for culture)
I'm a secondary school teacher, and I teach my Indigenous Language (Ibibio language) this Language is spoken in the south south region of Nigeria, Akwa ibom state to be precise, I enjoy doing it. Reason is for the love of culture, because my language is my identity. I realized that children both in my generation and the one to come will soon despise the language. In my analysis it turns out that both young and old were not speaking thier language it was like 80%,they decided to embipe, and neglate their own culture (language) for a foreign one forgetting that is another man's Indigenous Language. It's high time we begin to be proud of what we have,and make use of our own thing.
So I said No to all of this. I knew if I start from the younger ones it'll get to the oldest, and it'll pass from one generation to the other. I knew I wasn't going to teach them how to read and write the language alone, but also how to greet in our culture, how to dress, cook different delicacies, how marriage is being done here, and this will help them were ever the go . The dressing, food will sure show thier identity.
I didn't stop there, I also thought them how to dance our local dance.i stand with this (Bring back our Language)
Now I'm proud to say that I did the work religiously and I'm having a good results.
My students can now read books written in Ibibio language, the can communicate with it and the write well with the language.
