We have a new community on Hive: The Labyrinth Lovers Community!

As you might have noticed from time to time in my photos, @cosmictriage (aka "Mrs. Denmarkguy") and I have a labyrinth in our back yard. We built it in the summer and fall of 2012, after being inspired by a "Lavender Labyrinth" we saw near Mt. Shasta, California.

We also happen to be lifetime members of The Labyrinth Society, a worldwide organization dedicated to education and support for lovers and keepers of labyrinths around the globe.

So what's the big deal with Labyrinths, and why should you care?

Well, Labyrinths are great meditation and healing "tools" that have been around since ancient times... and I truly mean ancient times: Remains of labyrinths dating back as much as 5,000 years have been found at sacred sites around the world!

A Truly GLOBAL Phenomenon!

One of the cool and interesting things about labyrinths is that they are a truly global design... the patterns of labyrinths have arisen independently in indigenous cultures on different continents!

In general, they are regarded as a somewhat "spiritual" symbol, but they are by no means attached to religion.

And no, there's nothing "occult" about them: they are just as often found in places like Chartres Cathedral in France, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and numerous Episcopal Churches as they are in relation to Pagan sacred sites.

Labyrinths are NOT Mazes!

The difference between a "maze" and a "labyrinth" is simple:

Labyrinth have a single entrance and a single winding and continuous path that leads to the center, with plenty of twists and turns, but NO dead ends and NO "puzzles" to be solved. They are a winding path — often seen as a metaphor for life — from the beginning to the center, and are typically used as meditative tools.

Mazes are full of dead ends and loops and are a puzzle that requires solving, and even can make you feel lost, which is the exact opposite of the intention behind a Labyrinth.
