The number of good productions from that country that I have watched probably had me a bit biased and I believe my expectations for this film were higher than normal. The truth is, all of the productions I have watched from Argentina are probably the best films they have produced and they do not represent the average quality of anything produced in there.
However, I wasn't thinking about this possibility when deciding to give Azor a watch. The plot simply seemed too interesting and with a lot of potential for intense and entertaining situations.
What was the movie about?
The movie follows a Swiss banker visiting Argentina with his wife in an attempt to establish contact with one of his partners and hopefully figure out why he disappeared. The country is going through a major political revolution that's very violent and dangerous to those that try to prevent it.
As the Swiss guy is going through the country, in the background we can see some harsh views about what happens when the rule of law has been lost and the government has turned against its people. These tragic events don't really affect the Swiss' guy actions, but it is clear there is some nervousness very palpable.
Subtle examples are given through the film of the type of bad things that can happen when these violent revolutions take place. We always see this from the perspective of the Swiss guy, which means, like an absent observant. Being aware of the tragic reality the country is going through but without being affected by it and without any intention of doing something about it. It is simply a neutral and constant observation.
La cantidad de buenas producciones de ese país que he visto probablemente me tenía un poco sesgado y creo que mis expectativas para esta película eran más altas de lo normal. La verdad es que todas las producciones que he visto de Argentina son probablemente las mejores películas que han producido y no representan la calidad promedio de nada producido allí.
Sin embargo, no estaba pensando en esta posibilidad cuando decidí darle un vistazo a Azor. La trama simplemente parecía demasiado interesante y con mucho potencial para situaciones intensas y entretenidas.
¿De qué trataba la película?
La película sigue a un banquero suizo que visita Argentina con su esposa en un intento de establecer contacto con uno de sus socios y, con suerte, descubrir por qué desapareció. El país está pasando por una gran revolución política que es muy violenta y peligrosa para quienes intentan impedirla.
Mientras el suizo va recorriendo el país, de fondo podemos ver algunas escenas duras sobre lo que sucede cuando se ha perdido el estado de derecho y el gobierno se ha vuelto contra su pueblo. Estos trágicos eventos realmente no afectan las acciones del hombre suizo, pero está claro que hay un nerviosismo muy palpable.
Se dan ejemplos sutiles a través de las escenas del tipo de cosas malas que pueden suceder cuando tienen lugar estas revoluciones violentas. Siempre vemos esto desde la perspectiva del tipo suizo, es decir, como un observador casi que ausente. Ser consciente de la trágica realidad que atraviesa el país pero sin verse afectado por ella y sin intención alguna de hacer algo al respecto. Es simplemente una observación neutral y constante.
The Swiss banker will have conversations with a lot of members of the high society about how he can help protect their assets. We will see all types of people including a priest who was probably very corrupt as well. The story portrays a rotten society in a very casual and effortless way as if this type of dysfunctional dynamic was something easy to find elsewhere.
I didn't enjoy the film very much despite the fact I found its written plot very interesting because the pace of the film was simply too slow. It honestly felt like the film lasted like 2.5 hours and in reality, it didn't even last 2 hours.
I believe this type of plot could be used for a great production, but in this case, the approach by the creators wasn't the best one, at least not in my opinion. I wasn't very intrigued about what could happen next, and the intense situations I was expecting never happened.
Main names associated with the film
Andreas Fontana was the director as well as one of the writers of the film. This was also his first time working in a regular-length production. As a director, he previously worked in a documentary short called Pedro M, 1981, and as a writer, he also worked in a short called La fin d'Homère.
The other writer was Mariano Llinás, and unlike Andreas, Mariano does have a lot of experience as a writer. He has participated in almost 20 different productions since his career began in the mid-2000s, some examples would be The Broken Land, Ensayo para Guemes and La Flor.
El banquero suizo tendrá conversaciones con muchos miembros de la alta sociedad sobre cómo puede ayudar a proteger sus activos. Veremos todo tipo de personas, incluido un sacerdote que probablemente también era muy corrupto. La historia retrata una sociedad podrida de una manera muy casual y sin esfuerzo, como si este tipo de dinámica disfuncional fuera algo fácil de encontrar en otros lugares.
No disfruté mucho de la película a pesar de que su trama escrita me pareció muy interesante porque el ritmo de la película era demasiado lento. Honestamente sentí que la película duró como 2.5 horas y en realidad ni siquiera duró 2 horas.
Creo que este tipo de trama podría servir para hacer una gran producción, pero en este caso, el enfoque de los creadores no fue el mejor, al menos no en mi opinión. No estaba muy intrigado sobre lo que podría suceder a continuación, y las situaciones intensas que esperaba nunca sucedieron.

How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?
The performance was okayish, but the pace of the dialogue was extremely slow during the majority of the movie. This isn't the fault of the actors and actresses but that of the writers, who created a story with little to no excitement and no proper intensity. This is the type of film you could watch if you are having trouble sleeping.
I liked the scenery because the story had events and conversations in all sorts of places, including remote ones. It was a bit interesting to see how a private banker does his network connections in a foreign country but again, the slow pace ruined everything for me.
Final thoughts
Azor had a plot that seemed intriguing when I read it, however, as the film continued to advance, I realized this was simply an extremely slow-burning story that literally had nothing to be excited about. There was no intrigue, no mystery, at least not an entertaining one, nothing.
The movie was the most boring one I have watched in several months and it was a huge disappointment for me. I wouldn't recommend watching this film unless you really like stories with a very slow pace and a bit of corruption here and there. However, I think the majority of the people will find this a very boring film.

A veces sueño ver películas con ritmos lentos; he de admitir que para todos no es un buen recurso, y más cuando el largometraje se vuelve tedioso. El thriller suele ser uno de mis favoritos... Este Azor no lo había visto, quizás porque últimamente he estado alejado del mundo del mundo del cine. Creo que voy a darle una oportunidad a ver qué tal. Aunque lo más probable es que si es muy lenta, terminaré aburriendome. Buena reseña, por cierto. ¡Éxitos!

De verdad te digo que este film es el que menos he disfrutado en mucho tiempo, pero si estás de ánimo para ver algo bastante lento creo que podría gustarte. En mi caso yo estaba esperando algo más movido y entretenido.
