Nigeria is an African country in the Western part of Africa that is rooted in culture and traditions as well as superstitions and myths about so many aspects of life. Even till date there are still some part of Nigeria that these myths are still practiced through storytelling and passed from generation to generation through kids as they grow up. The purpose of using them vary from caution, warning, fear etc. While I was younger, there are some of these myths that are used to scare us not to do certain things at certain times but it was when I grew up that I got to understand that it was for that purpose.

In Nigeria, it is believed that it is not good to whistle in the night because you can either invite evil spirits, snakes or even trigger occultic groups. Also, it is believed that anyone who whistles at night is going to face dire consequences. There are different stories of people who have whistled at night and faced severe consequences that will be used to emphasize on the dangers. As a child you'd be so scared and not even try to whistle once it becomes dark. This particular myth is used to ensure that children do not disturb their environment once it's late in the night.

Another one is that a boy child must not be beaten by a broom as it is believed that it will make him become impotent or reduce the size of his penis. Broomsticks can leave a lasting scar on a person's body or even inflict more harm than expected on a person among others, so I feel this is one of the reason it is not encouraged. In a case where a boy is beaten with a broom and he doesn't want to face the consequences he must beat the person with the same broom seven times. Interesting!

In Yoruba culture, when you hear names like "Babatunde" (The father has returned) or "Iyabo" (The mother is back), "Yejide" (Mother is here), or "Babatunji" (Father wakes up), or "Babajide" (Father is here) you'd know that the baby is a reincarnation of the dead Father or Mother in the family. It is believed that if for instance a mother dies during child birth or the father dies when his wife was pregnant, the child has come to replace the dead, so they will be named after them with such names as stated above. Apart from that, they also believe that if a child dies young, his or her ghost can go to another city to start a new life. Amazing!

Hunters in Nigeria made the belief that if it is raining while the sun is out that a lion is giving birth popular. It's quite a rare phenomenon so anytime it happens in Nigeria you'd see someone who is culturally oriented say it that "Oh! A lion is about to put to birth". Well, this is not true. What happens during this time is called sunshower and it is described here according to Wikipedia-

"A sunshower or sun shower is a meteorological phenomenon in which rain falls while the sun is shining.[1] A sunshower is usually the result of accompanying winds associated with a rain storm sometimes miles away, blowing the airborne raindrops into an area where there are no clouds, therefore causing a sunshower...
