RAINY SEASON: NEW YAM AND SOME OTHER FRESH FOOD ITEMS FLOOD MARKETS

We are now in the season of new yams in Nigerian markets as farmers and yam sellers flood the markets with new yams. I have seen different vehicles stacked with heaps of yams of different sizes being conveyed possibly from the farms to the markets and I cleared my doubt when I visited the market and saw how yams can be spotted in every corner of the market.

This may be a good time to get yams at affordable prices because they are still being harvested and can been found in surplus. However, by affordable, it does not necessarily mean it will be extremely cheap but it will still be better than how it was when new yams have not been harvested. The yams that were sold in markets, let's say about a month ago or thereabouts are the ones that sellers have stored in their barn for a long time, hence, the high cost of the yams.

This is a good period for people who have a large family and who have enough money to buy in large quantities and store in their house for personal consumption because the prices will be quite reasonable.

The prices of the old yams too will have to drop to some extent because people may not even want to buy them again. However, there are preferences to new and old yams. New Yam may not be good for making pounded yam due to the excessive water that it contains at the moment, so anyone that is a big fan of pounded yam, for instance will still opt for old yam.

The rainy season have made some other foodstuffs also available in large quantities. I also spotted that the sweet potatoes and Irish potatoes were also fresh and big. There may be some other ones which I didn't spot anyways. In the coming months as the rain continues we will surely get to see more fresh foods in the market. Of course, I wouldn't forget the fresh vegetables that were also been displayed as well. Some fruits like oranges, garden eggs and the likes are also plenty in the market now.

However, this does not totally mean that the prices are cheap and this can be as a result of our economy that is presently going through a difficult time. The cost of goods and services are generally on the high side but we hope that once there are surplus fresh food items in the market the price will drop. One factor that bring about a compulsory drop in the prices of food when there are fresh foods is that the farmers will not want them to waste in their farms, so they will have no choice than to sell at almost give away prices.

Oh wow! Your sweet potatoes or yam there are quite huge in sizes. 😲 The ones we have here in our country are only about the size of our fist. 😅 But I certainly agree that during rainy season, somehow vegetables are readily available and a bit cheaper compared to during dry season. I enjoy going to the market as well to buy some vegetables and fruits!

We still have more species of yam that are bigger and longer than this. I couldn't even carry them after buying, I had to seek the service of some boys whose job is to help drop-off items at the car park (at a charge anyways).

Is this the species of potatoes you have in your country as well?

Those type of potatoes doesn't seem to be found here at our country. The ones we have are the small ones! So it's quite interesting and fun to look at other vegetables and fruits from other countries. That's why I try and eat local dishes when I travel to other places!

Wow. It's quite interesting to read this. There is another specie that we have that is reddish in color. I haven't traveled out of my country before and I will be sure to explore more foods from other countries and cultures

I have seen yams that need to be carried away in wheelbarrows! I am always amazed at the size of these yams! I wonder why the seeds are not spread around the world because what a wonderful way to feed many people!

I would love to grow some of those in my garden!

Thanks for your comment. I guess the reason you may not have these species in your region is due to the weather. Even here in Nigeria, there are some States that produce big and well produced foods that others. The weather conditions may be a factor.
