MARKET FRIDAY: BUYING TOMATOES, RED BELL PEPPER, SPINACH, ETC
Hey lovelies β€οΈ
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese π
Welcome to my blog π€
There are a lot of fresh foods in the market lately and all thanks to abundance of rainfall that we have been experiencing for some months now. Rainfall is a big blessing to farmers and their produce as well as we the consumers. I went to the market to buy the ingredients I would need to prepare meals over the weekend after work so that I wouldn't have to go to the market tomorrow.
It was quite late before I got to the market and it was almost the rush hour when the market would be closed for the day but I was still able to purchase the few things in my list. The market closes by 6pm and I left my shop at about 5pm, and it took some minutes before I got to the market. And before I even got the right spots to buy what I needed most of the shops have started packing their goods but nevertheless I was still able to tick all my boxes.
I have the plan of cooking vegetable soup (efo riro) and fish stew, which is the most important part of my list. So, I had to quickly locate tomatoes and pepper sellers with fresh and big ones. I bought the quantity that I needed which amounted to about #1,200, that is, the combination of tomatoes, scotch bonnet and red bell pepper. Afterwards, I bought some onions as well which is also sold by the same person.
Then, I quickly dashed to the person that is selling vegetable leaves before he will close. The preffered leaf for the soup I want to cook is spinach but there are times when I combine it with water leaf or pumpkin leaves. But this time around I feel like cooking it without adding any other leaf. I approached the man with one of the freshest set of leaves - I'm very particular about the freshness of foods. He sells each for #50 but I was able to negotiate for three for #100. So I bought nine for #300.
Then he sliced them all into the desired size that I wanted.
I want to thank you for being a part of the #MarketFriday Challenge. I have personally found there is always so much to learn about people, where they live, and how things are done in different parts of the world. For me, reaching out across the globe and learning about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, has been such a rewarding experience. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the rituals, festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... and what is normal for us? There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. We do differ in many ways, which makes us interesting and unique, but, there are many ways in which are so much alike.
