Guajiro tribe is a nomadic matriarchal society that resides in Venezuela and in the North eastern part of Colombia. In this tribe, the women are more superior to the men in terms of status and class and guess what, their high class gives them the power to choose their potential suitor. The process of choosing a suitor is carried out during what they refer to as Chichimaya, fertility dance.

The Guajiro tribe practice a matriarchal system where women in control in the family, society and community as a whole. They govern the affairs of the community and have the authority to preside and decide over all issues in the community. Rules are made by them and they have power vested in them to punish offenders. In matriarchal societies, the lineage of a person is traced back through the woman and not the man, as it is popular in most tribes around the world. In other words, they are matrilineal.

When children are born in the Guajiro tribe, they are baptized into the Catholic church. They are mostly Catholics, however, some also practice traditional religions. After the baptism, a naming ceremony is organized where the mother is going to provide the child's name (matriarchy comes to play here).

At puberty, the girls are separated from the boys for some months until they are deemed ready for marriage and during this period they pass through some trainings that will be useful for them during maturity. This training prepare them for the high status role they will be taking up in the society as mothers and wives. The young girls are meant to drink a special herbal concoction during the months that they are separated from the boys. This concoction is presumed to cleanse them of all their childish behaviors and make them behave as adults.

A coming-out ceremony is arranged when the training comes to an end to celebrate the transition of the girls to women, and from childhood to adulthood. A major aspect of the ceremony is the Chichimaya, that is, fertility dance. During this dance, boys will round in a circular pattern round the girls, teasing the girl he wants by removing his hat and waving it towards her, if the girl is interested she will try to catch the boy and make him fall to the ground by tripping him. If she successful makes him lose his balance and fall to the ground, she has won herself an husband. Afterwards, the two are expected to "get a room".

The Guajiro tribe take marriage rites very seriously and this means that the family of the man will have to present a lot of gifts and a huge bride price.

Thank you for your time lovelies.
