Nigeria is a country that is rooted in culture and traditions. With over 250 unique ethnic groups Nigeria houses different people with different values and beliefs. These cultures and traditions often influence the decision of choosing a spouse by vast majority of people in Nigeria. There are some tribes that do not want their child to marry another tribe due to the opinion that they have about them.

Speaking about perception of tribes, there are some tribes who are believed to be fetish, some are believed to be stingy, some are believed to be promiscuous and quick to abandoning their home. Others are perceived to be prone to having wives in different locations within the country, some are perceived to be quick to anger that can cause severe problems in the family, and so on. With these kind of perception about some tribes, it is always difficult for some parents to give their blessings to their child who is not marrying with their tribe.

There are other impediments to marriage apart from tribe, culture and traditions, some of them include religion, health, status/class and age. Just like culture and traditions, religion can pose a huge threat to the joy of lovers. There are parents that can never allow their child to marry from another religion no matter how hard you try to convince them. We have even heard of stories of parents disowning their child who is adamant because of this sole reason. Status or class is other impediment that have put an end to the stories of two love birds. The rich will always want to marry the rich and they will do everything possible not to make their child marry a person that is not in their class.

Health issues is also a common impediment to marriages. This is the reason people who intend to marry each other are advised to do series of test to be sure that they are compatible some of these tests include genotype, blood group, HIV/AIDS, etc. There are lot of relationship that have also ended as a result of health issues. However, it may be difficult for the lovers but it is in their best interest. Unlike those days when our fathers and mothers are not privileged to running tests and they marry themselves which results to birthing children that are faced with one health challenge or another. We are blessed in our generation to know the right thing from the wrong thing.

In relation to health issues, there are couples who could not go ahead with their marriage plans when the church demands for their medical test results during their marriage counseling sessions. Some people have dated for months to the point that they are planning to tie the knot without checking if their health status is compatible. Even if you face challenges from parents due to tribe, culture and traditions, class and status, or religion, you should not shoot yourself in the leg by not veryfing your health status.
