I know we are at the beginning of June, barely halfway through the year, but today was a different day at home, I say this because in Venezuela certain meals are customary at certain times of the year, and at home today we baked a small suckling pig in the oven, of course, I did it without the dressings or seasonings typical of Christmas food, However, I already had some time with the pig in the oven thinking about what I would do in December, or at least, what we could cook this year for Christmas, suddenly unexpectedly, my husband came into the kitchen, it turns out that in the yard we have two cambur plants, and one had already formed a good bunch, and as my husband realized that it was ready to be cut, he did it and put it in the kitchen.

Immediately the Christmas spirit was activated, and as I know that when the bunch is cut to the cambur plant, it is also cut to her and so the children grow stronger, well, taking advantage of this I asked my husband to bring me all the leaves, I know that in the market they sell them by the kilo, but as December is approaching they are getting more and more expensive, and I think that as long as you can save, you save. I will tell you how I did it:

First, I would like to clarify that both banana and cambur leaves can be used to wrap the hallacas.

The first thing I did was to take the leaves and to pass them through fire, this is done for two reasons, the first to kill the bugs, and the second because when passing them through fire they soften a little and can be folded without breaking much, this allows us to wrap with them more easily.

I will tell you the following, first as I could pass the center of the leaf by fire, I must emphasize that in stoves it is a little uncomfortable, normally this is usually done in a campfire or with a reberbero, it is more comfortable. But well, I was telling you that I started by heating the center, this with the intention of being able to detach the strip of the leaf lengthwise, well, to tell the truth I helped myself with a knife, but after having heated the central part along the entire length.

Once I cut the centers removing all the central membrane of the palm, by medium pieces, practically cutting the leaf in equal parts, I began to pass them through fire, this time the whole leaf, front and back, I hope that in the images you can notice the change of color and stiffness.

Then I wiped them with a clean cloth to remove any impurities, put them all together and wrapped them in a single bundle. That way I put them in a plastic bag and kept them in the refrigerator, I must remind you that if you dare to do this, when you are going to use them you must take them out of the refrigerator or let them thaw, wash them again even with warm water if you prefer and ready, to wrap hallacas.
