The editorial in the New York Times last May 19, according to which "The war in Ukraine is getting complicated and America is not ready", did not go down to the Ukrainian people.

In the editorial, The New York Times argues that it is too dangerous to assume that Ukraine can win the war, stressing that Russia is too strong, that Ukraine should make a painful compromise and cede some territory to Russia. In short, the United States must understand the futility and stop provoking Russia, writes the NYT. According to them, Ukraine will lose anyway so stop helping it so that the war ends sooner.

The White House not only risks losing Americans' interest in supporting Ukrainians, who continue to lose lives and livelihoods, but also jeopardizes long-term peace and security on the European continent.

The response of the Ukrainian authorities with an editorial of the Ukrainian newspaper Kyev Indipendent, according to which the NYT editorial tries to pass the acquiescence and betrayal of the values of the free world as a pragmatic reasoning, is harsh.

Ukraine’s victory in the war with Russia is not unrealistic nor is it unlikely. If we want the world to be as we know it, Ukraine’s victory is the only option. And Western financial and military support for Ukraine is the only way to establish long-term peace and security on the European continent.

According to Kyev Indipendent any concessions to Russia now will lead to a new war sooner or later, while Ukrainians stranded in any region occupied by Russia will be tortured, raped or killed. The New York Times is publishing story after story about the hell Russia makes Ukrainian civilians live in the occupied territories. Meanwhile, its editorial board suggests that Ukraine should cede territory to Russia, where more atrocities will no doubt occur.

The Russian military is weak, its command structure is abysmal, and it may very well lose the war against the smaller but much more motivated Ukrainian forces willing to defend their homes, their families and their country to the last. Following the advice of the New York Times will lead to more war, more destruction and a heavier burden on the American people in the long run.

The two newspapers show the two sides of the western positions regarding the war outcome.

On a side, the Ukrainian authorities are aiming for a military victory against Russia instigated, and even deluded, by an extremist front represented by the US administration, Great Britain, Poland and the Baltic Republics, but also by Von der Leyen.
On the other side there are some European governments and a large part of the world which would like to avoid deluding Ukraine from continuing a devastating and bloody war that it cannot win and lay the foundations for a ceasefire and a negotiated solution to the conflict.
