Haiti sink into the chaos

The situation in Haiti is out of control. With the fall of the government after the assassination of President Moïse a year ago, it is the armed gangs that dominate. In six months, nearly 2,300 civilians were victims of clashes between gangs for control of the territory. The UN calls for the blocking of supplies of small arms and ammunition

For a long time the bishops of Haiti have launched appeals and warnings regarding the crisis that the Caribbean country is going through. Violence and corruption are rampant everywhere. Thousands of small business owners have been forced to close their shops in the past year and the population has plunged further and further into poverty. Many people are now starving. The United Nations Human Rights Office (Ohchr) has communicated its concern for the increasingly serious violence that is gripping the country.

At least 100 people have been killed in the past two weeks in clashes between two major local armed gangs in the capital's Cite Soleil district

On July 16, the OHCHR issued a statement, a few hours after the UN Security Council unanimously approved the resolution presented by the United States and Mexico, to renew the mandate of one of its offices in the country, urging surrounding nations to block the transfer of small arms and ammunition to those who support daily gang violence and criminal activities.

Various humanitarian agencies, among other things, have shown themselves willing to intervene to assist communities affected by violence if security conditions permit.

Jeremy Laurence, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said on the same day:

We have documented that in the capital, from January to the end of June, 934 victims, 684 injured and 680 kidnappings were registered. In just five days, that is, from 8 to 12 July, at least 234 people, mostly innocent civilians, were killed or injured in the protracted clashes in the Cite Soleil area. The armed gangs are becoming more and more sophisticated in their actions and launch simultaneous, organized and well-coordinated operations in different areas of the city. The government has a duty to protect citizens by defending their life and property.

In many cases it is reported that criminal gangs, in order to maintain control over the population, prevent people from even obtaining the necessary water and food, leading them to a condition of increasingly severe malnutrition.

A year after the unsolved assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, due to the continuing violence, many Haitians have tried to leave the country, now totally in chaos and economic bankruptcy. Attempts to form an efficient government coalition have so far failed, and the effort to promote new elections has failed.

The violence arises above all from the battle for dominance between the two main gangs. The G9, also known as the G9 Family and Allies, is headed by Jimmy Cherizier, a former policeman known as "barbecue", formerly the protagonist of massacres and accused of still having as allies members of the conservative government of Moïse. The other is G-Pep, born in Cite Soleil itself and allied with other armed groups operating in the region around the capital.
