China: vaccination requirement lifted after popular uprisings

Less than two days after the Beijing government announced it would launch China's first vaccination obligation, authorities canceled this measure in a rare concession to criticism from Chinese citizens. The vaccination obligation, announced on Wednesday and set to go into effect on July 11, would have limited entry to public places such as cinemas, museums and theaters only to vaccinated people and would require workers of certain professions to be vaccinated. But the refusal by citizenship was swift, with many Chinese turning to Chinese social media to declare the vaccination requirement an illegal restriction of their freedom and question the effectiveness of vaccines against the highly contagious omicron variant and immuno-evasive.

This cancellation of the first attempt to impose a vaccination obligation in China shows the power of public opinion. Chinese society is dominated by the government. But the government promptly changed its policy in the face of a refusal of citizenship. This means that they accept the perception of public opinion on the vaccination obligation as illegal. The backsliding of the authorities is unusual in a country where the government exercises immense power over the lives of the population. Daily movements are already limited by a system of health codes, hundreds of millions of people are subjected to frequent tests and China requires mandatory quarantine for anyone who is infected and their close contacts.

The important thing to add is that in China no one has been vaccinated with Pfizer and Moderna's experimental mRNA products or other similar vaccines, the two or three Chinese vaccines are of the so-called traditional type. Both in China and in Hong Kong the adult and young population has largely been vaccinated with local vaccines, but the elderly are vaccinated much less, in Shanghai and Beijing the percentages of elderly vaccinated are around 70% and in Hong Kong where government control is less tight they are under 50%

The other thing to add is that the same thing happened in Russia and India, there was no vaccination obligation and almost no one was vaccinated with Moderna and Pfizer mRNA products. In India, AstraZeneca has been used mainly and local vaccines, but the percentage of Indians vaccinated is only 65%. If we then add South Africa, Mexico and Brazil which are the other important emerging and non-Western countries, we have a similar situation: no vaccination obligation and low vaccination rates.

China, India, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa total 3 billion people and are the major emerging or already emerged non-Western economic powers. The idea therefore that what is done in North America and Europe plus their allies with NATO bases in Japan and Korea represents the world is wrong.

Most of the world did not follow the direction of the US authorities recall that mass vaccination with emergency products not tested for years as is usually done was a gimmick of the US government.

But in China, Russia, India, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and many other countries that make up most of the planet: vaccination has not been imposed and the experimental products of Moderna and Pfizer have not been used. However, the example of China is striking because it is an authoritarian government, but in the case of the health of 1.4 billion Chinese it follows what appears on Chinese social networks. Most Chinese citizens seem to have been against the obligation to vaccinate and the government has adapted. A sign of democracy in an undemocratic system. In our democratic systems, on the other hand, vaccine oppression continues even when it is clear that these vaccines cause more harm than good.
