General Chaos is a humor-based, action arcade/strategy game developed by Game Refuge Inc. and published by Electronic Arts for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. It was released in 1993.

Strategy games were a PC staple domain during the early 1990s so I was really glad that this came out on the Sega Genesis. When I had a gaming parlor business during that time, the college guys really liked to play this one.

The Story

Control the troops of Gen. Chaos against Gen. Havoc's troops in this many-player action game of tactics and firepower! 4 player versus and co-op play. Numerous battlefields to fight in. 4 types of squads to choose from and 5 unique weapon types to arm your squad with. Bring yourself to victory or defeat.

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics are decent. The characters are colorful and look straight from an old funny comic book. The backgrounds look a bit nice as well. The frame rate is smooth, and slow down happens rarely. I especially dig the cartoonish cloud of dust it makes when troops get into a brawl.

The sound effects are pretty good. From the sound of a bazooka rocket down to the hiss of the flamethrower. Every sound seems to be in place at the right moment. I give a big plus to the punch and kick sounds during hand-to-hand brawl combat.

The Gameplay

The game is 5 versus 5 warfare between two teams. You choose your squad of 5 men before a battle. You choose the types of soldiers like a flame thrower, a gunner, and a rocketeer. There are limits to each kind of soldier you could use.

As the battle proceeds, and if a soldier loses all his life, he will lay wounded on the field for a time. During that time, you can move a soldier by him and press the C button to call out a medic to come and revive him to be brought back into battle. There are also power-ups on the field to pick up newer weapons to use.

There is a campaign mode where you and your friends (up to 3 with a multiplayer adaptor) can go against the computer in a set of battles with each one getting harder in difficulty.

Then there is the regular play where up to 4 players can team up or go against each other in combat. And finally, the last mode is the boot camp, which is a training mode. So you will get familiar with the game mechanics.

The gameplay is surprisingly addictive. Playing against the computer or a friend is equally fun.

My Verdict

General Chaos is a collectible gem it if you still love to play 2D retro games. It is a lot of replay fun and will be a damn great game for young teens and older. You will not forget such a creative combat game.

Play it on the nostalgic Sega Genesis/Mega Drive or play it on any damn good emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!

Yeah, it was a great shame this one wasn't revived for later consoles.
