The Nintendo 64 wasn't really a failure though Nintendo did lose their lead. The N64 had superior hardware to the PS1 (as it should have coming a couple of years later). However, the cartridges were more limited in size (not that big of a deal except for full motion video and CD quality soundtracks) and much more expensive to produce (a much bigger deal and limited 3rd party development). Not having big load times was nice though.

Just like with the gamecube, even though the console itself was powerful, the format of the games ends up backfiring.
