Hallelujah es una canción de Leonard Cohen publicada en su álbum Various Positions en 1984. Inicialmente, no obtuvo mayor reconocimiento. En 1991, fue versionada por el músico galés John Cale, y obtuvo una buena aceptación. En 1994, el cantautor estadounidense Jeff Buckley grabó la versión que resultó más aclamada, lo cual popularizó la canción, y logró que desde ahí fuese versionada por numerosos artistas (más de ochenta versiones, hasta la fecha) a través de conciertos y grabaciones
Hallelujah is a Leonard Cohen song released on his album Various Positions in 1984. Initially, it was not widely recognized. In 1991, it was covered by the Welsh musician John Cale, and was well received. In 1994, the American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley recorded the version that was more acclaimed, which popularized the song, and from there it was covered by numerous artists (more than eighty versions, to date) through concerts and recordings.

Es un poema basado en historias bíblicas, relatos antiguos, creencias, la fe y las inseguridades e inquietudes existenciales. Cohen utiliza la simbología judía para expresar la gloria y la pena de amar. En el primer estribillo menciona un acorde celestial que el rey David componía a Dios (el Aleluya), y de inmediato se dirige a una mujer, y señala con ironía que a ella no le interesa la música. Por eso le explica cómo es el acorde a medida que lo ejecuta: "Va así: la cuarta, la quinta, cae la menor y sube la mayor". En la segunda estrofa, relata el momento en que David vio a Betsabé bañándose en un tejado y quedó maravillado de su belleza. También menciona la traición de Dalila al cortarle el pelo a Sansón, como metáfora de la mujer en general de la que un hombre se enamora apasionadamente.
It is a poem based on biblical stories, ancient stories, beliefs, faith, and existential insecurities and concerns. Cohen uses Jewish symbolism to express the glory and pain of loving. In the first chorus he mentions a heavenly chord that King David composed to God (the Hallelujah), and he immediately addresses a woman, and ironically points out that she is not interested in music. That is why he explains what the chord is like as he plays it: "It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth, the minor falls and the major rises." In the second stanza, he recounts the moment when David saw Bathsheba bathing on a roof and was in awe of her beauty. He also mentions Delilah's betrayal by cutting Samson's hair, as a metaphor for the woman in general with whom a man falls passionately in love.
