Este post está escrito en dos idiomas y dividido para facilitar la lectura.
Coincido con muchos sobre el hecho de que leer un libro en físico es mejor a leer un libro digital. Especialmente porque te mantiene más concentrado en la historia y, además, haces menos uso de la luz azul que emiten los dispositivos, la cual a largo plazo es perjudicial para la salud de los ojos.
Sin embargo hay una práctica que vengo realizando desde hace muchísimos años, que es la de darle una segunda vida a los libros. Es decir, comprar libros usados.
Antes hacer este tipo de compras me parecía un insulto, especialmente porque en aquella época consumía mucho BookTube y el consumismo que se ve en esos canales es abismal. Yo también quería tener toda mi estantería llena de libros nuevos y en perfecto estado.
I agree with many that reading a physical book is better than reading a digital book. Especially because it keeps you more focused on the story and, in addition, you make less use of the blue light emitted by the devices, which in the long run is detrimental to the health of the eyes.
However, there is a practice that I have been doing for many, many years, which is to give books a second life. That is, buying used books.
It used to seem like an insult to me to do this kind of shopping, especially because at that time I used to consume a lot of BookTube and the consumerism that you see in those channels is abysmal. I also wanted to have my entire bookshelf full of new books in perfect condition.
Pero cuando la situación en Venezuela se puso bastante difícil a nivel económico, los libros nuevos dejaron de ser una opción para muchos, entre ellos yo incluida. Por lo tanto la única alternativa era comprar libros usados.
En Caracas se llegaron a organizar muchas ferias de libros en dónde la mayoría que se vendía eran libros usados, pero en muy buen estado. Siendo ésta mi única opción, comencé a comprar libros de segunda mano.
Mi sorpresa fue al encontrarme un libro lleno de apuntes de alguien más, quien contaba capítulo a capítulo su experiencia y sensaciones a medida que avanzaba el libro. Resultó interesante sentirse en el papel de esa persona al momento de leer ese libro.
Y así continué hasta hacer una costumbre el comprarme libros de segunda mano.
But when the situation in Venezuela became quite difficult economically, new books were no longer an option for many, including myself. Therefore the only alternative was to buy used books.
In Caracas many book fairs were organized where most of the books sold were used, but in very good condition. This being my only option, I started to buy second hand books.
My surprise was to find a book full of notes from someone else, who told chapter by chapter his experience and sensations as the book progressed. It was interesting to feel in that person's role when reading that book.
And so I continued to make a habit of buying second-hand books.
También aprendí a soltarlos y otorgarles una segunda vida. Vendiéndolos o donándolos a alguien más.
Por mucho tiempo vi como miles de libros eran tirados a la basura, aún a día de hoy lo sigo viendo cuando salgo de noche. Libros que perfectamente pudieron ser donados a alguna biblioteca pública o escolar.
Como también los he visto llevar polvo por años en bibliotecas personales en las cuáles nadie echa alguna mirada.
La producción de libros en físico generan un porcentaje de C02 debido a la producción del papel. Claro, evidentemente no es tan alta como la que pueda generar un ordenador o una tablet en formato eBook.
Pero todo pequeño cambio puede ayudar en sobremanera.

As I have also seen them dust for years in personal libraries where nobody takes a look at them.
The production of physical books generates a percentage of C02 due to the production of paper. Of course, it is obviously not as high as the one generated by a computer or a tablet in eBook format.
But any small change can help a lot.
El darle una segunda oportunidad a muchos libros, para mí significa darle una segunda oportunidad a la naturaleza en sí misma.
El hecho de que sean usados o de segunda mano, no significa que su historia es diferente o no vale la pena leerlo.
Esto también nos enseña a cuidar un poco nuestras finanzas (ya que los libros nuevos suelen ser un poco costosos) y nos enseña a tener desapego con los bienes materiales.
Los libros que ya has leído y estás seguro que no volverás a leer, puedes donarlos o venderlos. Hay muchas personas que no tienen posibilidades de adquirir muchos libros y están deseosas por adquirir conocimientos y vivir nuevas experiencias a través de las historias. Ésta vez puedes ser tu quién le brinde esa oportunidad.
Giving a second chance to many books, to me, means giving a second chance to nature itself.
Just because they are used or second hand, doesn't mean that their story is different or not worth reading.
This also teaches us to take a little care of our finances (since new books are usually a bit expensive) and teaches us to have detachment with material goods.
The books that you have already read and you are sure you will not read again, you can donate or sell them. There are many people who cannot afford to buy many books and are eager to acquire knowledge and live new experiences through stories. This time you can be the one to give them that opportunity.
Existen muchas organizaciones en dónde aparte de apoyar a las familias con escasos recursos con víveres y ropa, también aceptan donaciones de libros, con el fin de extender la educación para quiénes lo necesitan.
Adquirí estos seis libros por menos de 14 dólares, todos ellos son de segunda mano. Es mi momento de darles una nueva oportunidad de ser leídos y disfrutados, también tomaré apuntes y haré reseñas sobre ellos. Una vez realizada mi expedición por sus páginas, le tocará la misma oportunidad a alguien más.
Esto no quiere decir que no compres libros nuevos más nunca, ni tampoco es una crítica para quiénes lo hacen. Sólo es mostrar una puerta a nuevos pensamientos y experiencias.

There are many organizations where besides supporting families with scarce resources with food and clothing, they also accept donations of books, in order to extend education to those in need.
I purchased these six books for less than 14 dollars, all of them are second hand. It is my time to give them a new opportunity to be read and enjoyed, I will also take notes and review them. Once my expedition through their pages is done, it will be someone else's turn to have the same opportunity.
This is not to say that you don't buy new books anymore, nor is it a criticism for those who do. It is only to show a door to new thoughts and experiences.

I used to love buying used books when I was young. I was also trading the books that I owned with a book that I wanted to read. But these days, I only buy new. So, this post kind of reminds me of that time and I wanted to relive that moment again. Who knows, I'd be buying old stuff again.
At most used book fairs I always find wonderful reads. Particularly since many of the books published many years ago can only be found there. Unfortunately, there are many classics that publishers no longer republish.
¡Me encantan los libros viejos! Bien sea de alguna biblioteca de un familiar, o un puesto de libros, ya que me parecen... Misteriosos y especiales. Por ejemplo esa historia de las anotaciones del anterior dueño de tu libro es súper interesante. Encontrar esas cosas es como saber que tu libro tuvo historia...
Al contrario que vos sigo prefiriendo leer en mi tablet ya que me resulta más cómodo, pero no olvido la práctica tradicional. Los pocos libros que llegué a comprar en físico los atesoraba muy bien sobre todo porque me dolía cuando se quedaban con ellos y no me los devolvían jamás, pero entendí que, como dices, hay que darle una segunda oportunidad a los libros no solo comprando a segunda mano, sino donandolos y/o regalandolos. 💟
Estoy en ese proceso ya que creo haré un viaje y sería un desperdicio dejarlos allí guardados. Todo un mundo de aventura, perdiendose.

Guao, yo la verdad no puedo leer desde un dispositivo porque mis ojos terminan como unos huevos fritos. 😂 Yo cuando me fui de Venezuela doné la gran parte de mis libros a bibliotecas escolares, aunque algunos otros también los vendí.

I totally agree with your idea. I like getting used books too. I love seeing all that inscriptions and makings made by people. It's a chance into thier minds.
I have being trying to start a book-trade of sorts here, and I've only gotten one person. Hopefully it gets better

I remember that many years ago, with my friends from the readers' circle, we carried out an initiative called: write in my book. Basically, we would choose a reading, buy a single book and each of us would read it and pass it on to another friend, but always leaving annotations.
I always chose to be the last one to read all the accumulated annotations left by the others, it was a pleasant experience.
