The Double-Edged Sword of Smartphones in Education - SCIFIMULTIVERSE
If you are going to ask me if students should have a phone when they are taking class or lesson, I find phones to be most distractive devices ever of the 21st century. Our parents actually thought it would be the computer that would distract us. I am so sure that many of them did not see smartphone coming.
When smartphone first came, it was something that was big enough that people hold in hand and the only thing that was on it is just to make calls and some tiny little games just to keep time passing. But as times went on and as more games and stuff start coming up, the likes of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, games, COD and so on, we come to another new level of living where smartphone has become like the air we breathe, especially to this new generation of teenagers and young adults. Some people will even pick phone against their own breath.
The carbon dioxide and oxygen that they are breathing in and out, some people can sell it to have the latest phone if that will pay them. I am so sure that phones is one of the best thing to ever happen in this generation. It connects people together, it makes life very easy, you can access a lot of information and you cannot be left out of anything that is happening in the world at real time.
With your phone, it's like you are everywhere all at once. But at the same time, there should be barricades, there should be fences that we should put all around our life when it comes to privacy, things that we should show, things that we should put up. Then there should be a limit to how much we are using this tool per day, per time.
Even when you are staring at your phone over and over again throughout the entire day, your eyes start to get hot and if you are not careful, you might end up using glasses or complicating your own matter the more. Phones have their own advantages, I've listed that. There are many disadvantages that come with holding phones, that is, lowering the attention span of many people.
In fact, there are this new generation of Gen Z mothers that buy tablets for their children. Those children, they grow up to have no association with people anymore. Smartphone can actually open doors for you, for real.

It can give you unlimited knowledge and it can help you to look up things faster and you get answer at the tip of your finger. At the same time, there should be a point where you have to put your phone down and learn and that is the place of classroom. Whenever you are in a class, Cotsy demands that you put your phone aside, either put it on silent or on vibration mode and listen attentively to what your teacher is teaching you because if you end up pressing that phone and the exam comes and I'm sure they won't allow you to use your phone inside the exam hall, that phone will not save you on that day and you will surely fail.
That attention that you don't want to give to your lecturer or your teacher at that point in time, you will have all the attention to the paper that you are writing and there will be nothing that will be coming through your head. So, the best thing to do at this time is to listen attentively in class while you put your phone away and when you are done with your class, you can turn on your phone. I even prefer silent better than vibration because if your phone vibrates either on the table, it can even distract the next person beside you, even the lecturer depending on how close he is to you.
But when you are putting your phone on silence, you are shutting down any form of distraction and you are giving yourself unrepentant rapt attention to your lecturer. The bible repeatedly speaks about having self-control and wisdom when it is needed and when you are careful about what you are allowed to govern you. Christianity doesn't teach that we just do anything anyhow.
We are supposed to use every invention in a good way, not to make us evil. But these days, we are allowing phones to control our character. Freedom without discipline will surely become another form of slavery.
That is what you have to know. Just imagine that you are in a classroom where every student has a phone ringing on their desk while the teacher is explaining and something is actually going on. Something that can make you pass the exam.
A lot of them are listening and just 5 are checking their phone. When the exam comes, don't be surprised if those 5 people failed no matter how much they did the research at home. That is how terrible not using technology at the right time in the right way goes.
And if we decide to ban the use of phone in academic institutions, we might be causing another harm. So the best thing is for the people who owns them to know when and how to hold it and what to do at every point in time. How to be happy when life gets tough.
