Childhood Myth & Legends : Ladies of Hive Community Contest #300

Most of my belief as a child later became a myth. Some of those things when we were very small were seen as something that if you tried or if you give a thought about it you'll be very scared. But as I started to grow up as ages becomes to be, I started understanding that some of them are superstition, myth and taboos and all these were not even to create just ordinary fear.

The end result was for order and balance in the world. So there are so many. One is that if you chew sugarcane on the floor and you spat it on the floor is going to bring scorpion.

We later come to find out that that is not really really true in every aspect. If not, if that is so, sugarcane farms would have been the highest hideout of scorpions, but that is not the case. The truth about that is for us to have a clean environment because when you spat such a thing on the floor, it brings ants and also gets the environment very dirty.

So that is why then there are also superstitions here and there. Don't do this. If you did this, this is what will happen.

If you do that, that is what will happen and you are very scared to your bones because you don't want such a bad thing to happen to you. As we get older, even some of our grandparents who were the proponents and the agent of propaganda of all this later told us that they were meant to safeguard us because if such a fearful or scary thing is not attached as a consequence to this, people are ready to truncate and go from bad to worse with this. So they have to put a taboo beside it or make a myth that oh no one should say this, no one should do that.

There is also another one that it is believed that when it's raining, you don't put your hands outside to take from part of the rain, the drizzle from part of the rain because you can be struck by lightning.

Though that is true halfway, but the chances of you being struck by lightning because you put your hand outside is close to zero. But, indeed, lightning can actually struck.

Maybe my people have already found that in years past that someone was in the rain and was struck by lightning and they can see the correlation of it. It was from this correlation that they dragged this taboo out of to say that whenever it's raining, you don't put your hand to the funnel that is drizzling out. Whereas when I was young, people bathed inside the rain with pure innocence and it's very very interesting.

There are still a lot of all these things like that, that if you start to count, you will later find out that they were just a way to safeguard our life and nothing more. And as we grow older and we later find out that many of these things were not true in their entirety, it begins to understand that life goes beyond all those things that we think it is.

I really liked how you connected childhood superstitions to their real-world purpose, especially the sugarcane-on-the-floor example and how it was really about cleanliness more than scaring people. You wrote with a nice reflective tone, and the point about the rain and lightning being “true halfway” made the post feel thoughtful rather than just dismissive. If you plan to keep writing about beliefs, myths, or personal reflections like this, hivepro.ai could help you shape those ideas into even smoother posts. What other superstitions from your childhood do you think had a hidden lesson behind them?
