| TBT Contest: One photo, one story, one Thursday—November 5. Memories from college.

Greetings, dear friends of the wonderful TopFiveFamily community! I’m so happy to be able to participate once again in the TBT Contest: One Photo, One Story, One Thursday—November 5 that @lanzjoseg so kindly invites us to join every TBT Thursday.
For me, these college photos are such a beautiful memory; sometimes, when you’re actually living through that time, you don’t cherish those moments as much as you do years later. That saying, “Youth is a divine treasure,” is definitely true, because we had so much fun, without fear of failure. In the photo, I’m heading out on a camping trip on a university boat, the “Doña Teresa,” to a fishing village on the island of Cubagua. It’s an uninhabited island—there are only fishermen’s huts—and we’d spend the weekend fishing and enjoying the beaches and the open spaces that nature provides.
I remember that we’d leave Punta de Piedra on the university’s boat headed for Cubagua Island, and before we arrived, we’d cast out a fishing line and leave it secured by two anchors, then head to the beach to prepare everything we were going to have for lunch, then we’d go on a hike up the hill; from there, we’d sometimes hunt a rabbit or an iguana for food. There were a lot of petrified seashell fossils there that we’d also collect; for years I had a large collection of fossils, which I later donated to an oceanographic museum.
At noon, we’d go to haul in the chinchorro, retrieve the catch, and cast it back into the sea to keep fishing. We’d also take the opportunity to go snorkeling; some of the boys would take out their spearguns and go spearfishing. At night, we’d gather around campfires to make dinner, and someone would bring out a cuatro or a guitar so we could sing around the fire. we had a great time, but we had to go to bed early because we had to get up early the next day to haul in the fishing net again. But before going to sleep, we’d witness a truly beautiful sight: the phytoplankton along the shoreline, where the waves lapped against the sand, leaving a trail of tiny lights—sometimes blue, sometimes fluorescent green— How beautiful! What a precious spectacle nature offers us! Nature is definitely beautiful.
