Yo, ¡La mejor!// Me, the best!

I was nine years old when I met her and I remember that from that first day, at the beginning of fourth grade, I loved her. She was so modern, so radiant, so full of energy and so different from my mom that, here in secret, I tell you that I would have liked her to be my mom. At nine years old, she represented the woman I wanted to become.

Soon I felt that she also loved me in a different way than the rest of my classmates, I will not say the same as her children, with whom I shared many afternoons for three years, but part of that love she felt for them, reached me, which made me see her as my mom, we became so confident that at times I thought I was with a friend and I called her by her name.

II

Mariam, an exceptional child. At nine years old, she read so beautifully, so neatly that she immediately became one of my favorite children. I was in charge of the reading plan for the second stage of the school where I worked. A project to stimulate, in children, recreational reading and that culminated on April 23rd of each year with the celebration of the International Book Day, a meeting of children readers from different schools in the city.

Marian stood out, not only for the way she read, but her reading comprehension process was unique for her age, besides, she had a special spark for the writing of her stories.

As soon as I had contact with her I loved her: she was kind, affectionate, participative, curious, that kind of person who is easy to love, her taste for reading amazed me, I gave her books of stories and when she finished them she challenged me to discuss them.

III

In fourth and fifth grade I won first place as a reading child, in sixth grade the outlook was excellent and as the date approached the action intensified. Since January the teachers began to select their students for participation and from February on, the group, which was about forty children, began to carry out special activities two days a week with my teacher. We all felt proud, the teachers and directors made us feel like the best. Ten students from that pre-selected group, in an internal event, would be selected to represent the school in the final meeting.

I loved this stage because we did the exercises in a special room with the stories and with each work we did we set the scene. One of the activities I like the most was to draw the story in four scenes and then narrate it in our own words.

We worked hard, the teacher was very strict and when a classmate got annoying she would tell him seriously: -José Alberto, remember that we are working, even if it is fun.

And it was really fun, sometimes the teacher would ask for the day to dedicate herself only to us and at nine o'clock in the morning we would leave school, cross the street and we were already at the zoo. We would walk around the zoo, greeting and talking to the animals. In front of the lion, the hippopotamus, the elephant or any other tenant of the place, between all of us, we would build a story. We had a lot of fun because sometimes some "loqueteras" would come out.

The teacher would give a title, I remember this one in particular because we laughed a lot: The Elephant Wants a Boyfriend. The boys immediately went to the sexual side and we all followed them, the teacher laughed and only called attention if someone said some vulgar expression, for example: Pedro describing the elephant said: -The elephant has a dick like a ponchera- We all laughed, even the teacher, when we stopped laughing, she said:

-Let's see Pedro, you can say anything but in a delicate and pretty way, try it.

-I'm coming, teacher, let me think about it!...

-Yes, take your time, but you owe us, we are waiting.

We continued walking until we reached a beautiful grassy area of the park where we could sit down. Once we were organized, we began our reading comprehension activity for the day.

Suddenly, Pedro, who had not stopped thinking about his sentence, shouted:

-I got it, I got it, listen! His vulva was warm, wet and as big as the shore of the beach!

We all laughed again and fell on top of her, giving her lepe. The teacher tried to calm us down and when she finally succeeded she congratulated Pedro for such an excellent simile, asking us to give him a round of applause.

What beautiful memories, when I write them down I see the faces of my classmates, my teacher and those moments when I was so happy.

IV

"Training" the children for the event was a huge extra workload, as I was still attending to my regular class group. Selecting the readings, preparing the activities and correcting them took up a good part of my afternoons. When the stories chosen by the general organization of the event arrived in March, the work intensified.

Many afternoons I would meet with a small group to reinforce skills. Marian was my star child, she was always present and was my "right hand", many moms were involved in the project and helped me. It was a beautiful teamwork that filled us with challenges and expectations. One of the most nurturing experiences of my teaching career.

V

Today is the big day, I feel happy, joyful, confident, however, my stomach is fluttering and my heart is jumping, my teacher says it is normal, that I am excited.

When they begin to call us to enter the classrooms I said goodbye to my mom with a hug and approached the teacher who was with my other nine classmates wishing us the best. When it was my turn, we hugged each other affectionately and whispered in my ear: "You are the best!

When I entered the classroom I looked for a place near the window, because I felt short of breath, my hands were sweating, my heart and stomach were jumping wildly and in different rhythms, when one went up the other went down and both with such force that if someone approached me I was sure I would hear them.
The next thing I remember is the story in front of me, a sheet of paper and a pencil. I looked at the story, read the title, something told me that I knew it, that we had worked on it, but not a single word came to me that would give me a clue as to what it was about. I looked at the text, the letters seemed to be at recess, they ran, stopped, linked as they pleased and I could not manage to read any word.

I grabbed the pencil, it was inert. At that moment the image of the bunny went through my mind, trembling in my hands, after taking it out of the dog's mouth, it remained warm, soft, dead on my trembling palms.

Suddenly, someone passed by the desk picking up the test sheets, I had not written a word. Startled I looked to the sides and saw the children leaving the room, a teacher was giving directions, I did not hear him, I walked towards the door looking for my teacher.

When we looked at each other I felt that she knew everything that had happened. In her arms we cried together, she tried to comfort me and I did not want to leave her abundant padded bosom where I found refuge.

Today is the first time I tell what happened to me that day, my prodigious selective mind when those memories want to emerge, makes a leap, staying with the beautiful experiences that accompanied me those years. Reading also stayed with me, making my imagination fly, but I had not written a single narrative word until now. Perhaps, it is time for me to start.
