From book to movie

Those Who Wish Me Dead was originally a book authored by Michael Koryta. The story follows a female smokejumper in Montana named Hannah (Angelina Jolie). Hannah stumbles into a teenage boy named Connor (Finn Little) out in the middle of the forest. Connor is being chased by hired killers. It is up to Hannah and Connor to find a way to make it to safety back in town. The situation is made entirely worse by an out of control forest fire.

Not my momma

Although she may look like Connor's mother in the movie poster, Hannah is just a stranger to a lost boy. She takes an absolute beating over and over just to make sure Connor is safe. She has a past with failing to look after children and it has nearly destroyed her life. Hannah looks at Connor as a way to make up for her previous failures.

A love hate relationship

The park county sheriff named Ethan (Jon Bernthal from The Walking Dead) struggles to control the wild lifestyles that the smokejumpers live. Hannah and Ethan have a bit of a rivalry, but that quickly becomes a nonissue when the assassins start causing major problems. Hannah is staying all alone in a fire lookout tower when things first get crazy. Her job was to alert emergency services of lightening storms, which often initiate fires in the dense forest. She is distracted from her duties when she discovers Connor while she is on a hike. Her focus switches to securing him rather than protecting the forest.

Gorgeous in 4K

This movie just released in theaters, but is also available to stream on HBO Max which is where I watched it. The nature scenes of Montana showcased throughout are something grand to behold. This serene environment totally changes when destruction erupts in the form of a wind-powered & fast moving blaze. Prepare to feel some of the painful moments that these characters are forced to live through. Many things are quite literally unpredictable.

This movie is pretty good, but not quite great. I would recommend that you watch it, especially if you have HBO Max and a nice tv. There is no doubt that there is a lot of production value here. One thing that is especially nice is that Connor is pretty mature for his age, he just some annoying kid. The old lady jokes that Angelina Jolie is forced to endure are kind of sad. I remember her being young not too long ago. It doesn't ruin her performance, she still is pretty cool. Jolie does lack the sexy and bad ass persona that has represented in movies such as Tomb Raider and Salt. More like a rugged middle-aged to old lady this time around.

Was this movie on your radar already? Do you plan on checking it out, either in theaters or streaming online? I wasn't terribly excited for this one to release, but I did watch it as soon as I could once it became available. Overall I wasn't left surprised, this film provided just about what I expected from it. I'm happy pretty much anytime that I get to take advantage of my 65in 4K Sony.
