Summertime Organization - Yarn Sorting Fun!

That’s right! School’s out and it’s time for some Summertime organization.

I’ve been putting off yarn sorting for awhile now. We haven’t been able to walk inside our little walk-in closet because my yarn and supply bags have overtaken the space. It’s really a ridiculous sight to see.

Things that should be stored in our closet have been pushed out to our room due to my procrastination 🫤. It’s time to get things back in their places.

I ordered some really nice storage bins that helped get me in the mood to tackle this job. From the looks and feel of them I think they will hold up pretty well and hopefully keep their shape.

They are spacious enough for the amount of yarn I have. Last year I did go through all of my yarns to detangle and store them neatly in bags. I do not want to store them that way anymore because they keep getting tangled and knotted around each other. On top of that it’s insane trying to find the yarn I need when doing projects.

With these bins you have an option of leaving the bottom support down as one compartment or you can lift it and use as a separator to make two sections. There are velcro reinforcements to make sure it stays in place. I won’t need the bins sectioned off but it’s nice to have that option.

There are handles on each side for easy carrying. They do feel flimsy but I think with lightweight yarn they should stay in tack long enough.

There are more velcro pieces on the outside to seal the bins. I am really excited about getting this done and stacking them neatly in our closet.

I began by pulling out all of the yarn bags and sorting them by color. Here are the groups I started…

Eventually I need to rewrap the thicker yarns into balls to make more space in the bins. I am really hoping storing them in here will keep them from unraveling. I do know I will be able to find the ones I need much faster with them being color coordinated.

The pinks and purples go in! Can you tell
I had fun doing this part?! 😄

I ended up putting two color groups in each bin. There is still room in one of the bins to add a bit more. I was hoping I would have only needed three of them in order to use one for all of my tools and supplies. Oh well, I’m just glad all of my yarn has a better place to sleep at night now. 😂

That’s all the organizing I will do for one day. Tomorrow is all about tools and supplies. I’ll be sorting through threads, buttons, ribbons etc. and getting rid of anything I don’t use or care to have anymore.

I have this sense of obligation to save everything just in case I might need it some day. I always figured it would save me money if I already had it on hand. This way of thinking has caused me to have a lot of clutter and unwanted things over the years so I’ve got to fix that.

It does feels good getting these things organized so that I can find what I need when I need it. My husband is definitely happy I am finally getting to this, I think he misses our closet space lol. Maybe this will get me in the mood to craft more too ☺️.

How do you store your yarns? Leave me a snapshot in the comment section so I can see your organization skills. 😃😍

Thanks for Viewing!

I love sewing clothes, they are useful in cold weather,
I think you should have a decent closet space. You have attractive colors

Sewing clothes is a great skill to have.

Our closet looks better already just with the yarn organized lol.

I love the colors I have but I seem to always want more. 😄

Thanks for the visit ~

Some items that are not suitable can be left aside and used as bandages or a scarf.

They are really nice to use as storage bins. I have big plastic containers to organize mine.

I thought they were very attractive and I loved the texture of them. I seriously have only stored my yarn in big black bags so this is an upgrade for me that I'm enjoying.

That's great you have containers to keep yours organized ;D

Wow, you must have passed a lot in sorting them out. You have done a great job by providing the means to arrange the yarn accordingly for easy access. Thanks for sharing boss.

Thank you! I get so exhausted digging through those bags looking for the yarn I need that by the time I find it I'm out of the mood to crochet. 😂

If I was to keep crafting I had to do something and I think this will really help me enjoy my needle time again. 😊

Wow is your yarn container beautiful and you have so many yarns !!! hahaha I go crazy.

I handle few yarns, only the ones I need for my projects and the truth is I'm a mess. One day I will need a container like yours.

Thank you @tibaire! This is yarn that I have collected since I started crocheting. I finally started giving some away to people who were beginning to learn crochet. I’m not sure if I’ll ever use all of it but I admit I love having a nice size collection. 😛

Oooh look at your bins! I love the colors I see! I love those amigurumi doll figures. Are those WIPs you’re going to be finishing? Thanks for sharing a pic of your stash ~ 😍

How cute, you are giving away yarn for beginners! Yes, I would like to have a cupboard full of yarn, but I don't have the space hahaha

As for the amigurumi dolls, I have a project of 12 dolls, based on 12 friends. Since I've never made dolls before, I'm making the 12 first and then I'm giving them personality with the clothes. I hope one day I can make a post about this crazy project I have in mind.

Oh wow that sounds like such an interesting project! Yes, you should even share now about the idea and what you have prepared so far. No need to wait until it's all finished!

Seriously, can I do that? I find it interesting.

Of course! This is what we’ve been trying to bring back to the community. I know across Hive it seems most people show the process of their work and the finished results of a project all in one post. But when it was still new people were sharing what they were starting and updated us as they progressed. It was so much fun being a part of the journey of a project.

I encourage you to give it a go and you’ll be amazed at how motivated you get to progress on your work because we will be there supporting and cheering you along the way. It was so cool when more people used to do this because we held each other accountable too. Someone would always ask “so how’s that project coming along?”

I really wish more of us would do this more. It’s what I’ve been doing with the fidget blanket ;)

Thanks, that's going to be my post for next Monday!

I'll tell you that it's a project I started in January and I've only made 3 1/2 dolls out of 12. And truth be told, there are times when I feel unmotivated to continue and yes, I need someone to ask me how my project is going hahaha motivation

For sure ;D

Well I think this will be great for you to share then. I know other members will enjoy keeping up with this project and I hope through that you find new motivation.

Looking forward to your post now, yay! 😃

Oh the order is so beautiful just like those containers. I always fantasize about having everything organized and at hand but it only lasts a few days and everything returns to its chaos hahaha. I hope that doesn't happen to your threads.

And the first step to not becoming hoarded is to recognize that there are things that are not necessary, no matter how cute they are or that you think they will be needed at some point... For example, if years have passed and you haven't used such a thing, well I think it won't be necessary. It can be donated or given away. It is a good exercise that I do regularly with things and clothes, mainly.

I'm glad you've regained space in your closet. Now there will be room for wardrobe things 😅.

Thanks Laura! I really love my containers. Lol, you’re not the only one. This isn’t my first attempt at some type of organization haha! I do hope this lasts a lot longer than my other attempts.

You’re so right. That’s my weakness though. When I have something I think is so cute I make excuses to hold onto it forever. I have given away some yarn and even crochet hooks so that did feel good to do.

Yes! After I get this all done I can now rearrange my clothing and add some new Summer gear! 😆🤩🥳

Thank you!! ☺️

If you were to purchase some pretty boxes to match the decor of your livingroom and the other rooms, you can have them sitting out in the open to grab what you need when you need it. I’ve seen a lot of people crochet those big beautiful baskets to put their yarns in and it sits right in their livingroom as a decor piece ~ 😉

I commend your organizing skills, this looks so great.
I remember while growing up, my mom has plastic boxes to store her yarns, threads, crotchet pins and needles, it saves one alot of stress while working 👍
