Shot in 16mm, black and white, and with a budget of just 6,000 USD, the film tells us the story of Bill, a young aspiring writer without a job who, in the midst of a creative drought, decides to follow people down the street, random, to take notes. He's not interested in what these strangers do with their lives, or even who they are; the exercise is to follow them, to see where they go, to observe them in the crowd. The writer is, by nature, an observer, so Bill's idea makes a lot of sense and it seems logical that he becomes a voyeur. To try to stay in control and not stray from his original intention, Bill begins to set some rules for himself: never follow the same person twice, never follow single women at night through dark alleys, etc., and he does well until an impulse leads him to break his own rules and he finds himself embroiled in a plot that thickens as the film progresses.

No le interesa lo que esos extraños hacen con sus vidas, ni siquiera saber quiénes son; el ejercicio es seguirlos, ver a dónde van, observarlos entre la multitud. El escritor es, por naturaleza, un observador, así que la idea de Bill tiene mucho sentido y parece lógico que se convierta en un voyeur. I would say the film is a neo-noir psychological thriller. It has action, crime, intrigue and turning points in the plot that you don't see coming at the first change. Unlike other Nolan films, the beginning of this one is clear, but only in appearance.

We see, but above all, we hear a man who is being interrogated and who confesses everything from the beginning. It's Bill. He talks about how he followed people and why. That makes us think that if what we have seen in the synopses is told in the first scene, what else will be left to tell? The truth is that a lot, because the plot begins to get complicated as other characters intervene and when we feel that we are deciphering who is moving the threads of the story, a new revelation makes us rethink everything until we reach an ending that leaves us thinking (as is typical of Nolan) and questioning the story from the start. And then we say, as happened to us with Memento or Inception: you have to see it again.

Vemos, pero sobre todo, oímos a un hombre que está siendo interrogado y que confiesa todo desde un principio. Es Bill. Habla de cómo seguía a la gente y por qué. Eso nos hace pensar que si en la primera escena se cuenta lo que hemos visto en las sinopsis, ¿qué más quedará por contar? La verdad es que mucho, pues la trama comienza a complicarse a medida que van interviniendo otros personajes y cuando sentimos que estamos descifrando quien mueve los hilos de la historia, una nueva revelación nos hace replantearnos todo hasta que llegamos a un final que nos deja pensando (como es típico en Nolan) y cuestionando la historia desde el inicio. Y entonces decimos, como nos pasó con Memento o con Inception: hay que verla de nuevo.

Filmed over the weekends, this first feature film by Nolan already contained the essence of what his future projects would be, especially that temporary break in which things do not follow a linear chronology, forcing the viewer to be attentive and go putting together the timeline himself.
