Lady Bird or Lady Bug??

Hey everyone, growing up I have always known these as "ladybird", many refer to them as lady bug. The "bug" I get as it's a small pretty bug. Where does the bird part come in??

Sneaky Pete next door has some amazing sunflowers which are ornamental the pollinators love them, I took the opportunity to snap a few pics of this colorful lady bug and her fellow companion pollinators.

This now winter garden has end of season chilli's and a few varieties of various other companion flowers, sadly though until spring the rest of the garden will be mostly dormant, the pollinators still active and plentiful.

Ladybird tends to be British English (or British anyway) rather than Ladybug being American English - my family is confusing because my wife is half American, so we don't know what to call them. Also, not all Ladybirds are ladies - so Ladybird is potentially wrong on several counts!
