SMAP Contest Round 67: Da Boys

Every week @nelinoeva hosts a fun contest in the Feathered Friends Community. This week's theme is MALE BIRDS.

This is Melby. He's a dude.

There is a misconception that you can't tell the male American Crows from the females, but there are actually many identifying factors. Male crows may not have flashy feathers like many other birds, but they often demonstrate different behaviors and sizes.
Males generally have deeper voices, and there are some calls that are specific to females. Males also tend to be larger and a little bit bolder and more aggressive (but not always).

Luna in the foreground, whom I am almost certain is male based on deep-voiced territorial calls and bold behavior.

During nesting season you can get a lot of clues about who the males are in your neighborhood. The female of a mated pair will disappear to the nest for several weeks and the male will bring her food.
If you are lucky enough to witness the actual act of crows doing it you'll get a chance to see some very distinguishing characteristics.
In this video you can see Bo make a move to do it with Lorena. Notice the deep male voice and larger size of Bo, and the female-specific long rattle call of the more petite Lorena, his bride.

You'll also notice that crows do it missionary style: the boy always goes on top.

Thanks for checking out my entry to the #smap contest! You can use the link at the beginning of the post to see the rules if you want to enter.

All the stuff (pictures, words, etc.) I put in this post and any of my other posts is mine (unless otherwise stated) and can't be used by anyone else unless I say it's ok.

What beautiful birds... They look almost "metallic", as if they were marvellous feathered jewels... Excellent photos...

It is not easy to tell who is the boy from a first glance. 🙂
I love this close-up of Melby, he is handsome.
