When this happened, I only took a few pictures.
Not because shortly thereafter I had to run for my life but you can't outrun a bison which means shortly thereafter I was trampled to death.
Nope! Lucky day, I guess.
I was in my car, driving the park road.
These folks were hanging out right by the edge.
I parked.
Took some shots.
And then, suddenly they were moving. Into the road.
I took one more shot, then put down the camera.
Sure, I could have taken a ton more, gotten some great closeups of bison eyes and bison noses and bison horns and bison fur and bison hooves and bison wieners. I could have stayed behind the lens of that camera and gotten you guys all kinds of cool pictures to look at for ten or so seconds before you hit the upvote and moved on. (We all do it.) Instead, though, I chose to be present. I chose to be present as one of the massive heavies drifted in front of my car and stopped not five feet away. Present as his nostrils puffed and flared. As his tail twitched. Present as this beast as big as my vehicle eyeballed me and my little dog who, by the way, had gone from curious whimpering to silent enrapturement, just as I had.
Big, beautiful animal.
Moments later he began to move again, across the road, into the grass beyond, down the hill, out of sight.

Unfortunately it's true that we ate missing a lot looking trough the lenses and this moment shouldn't be waisted.

I was present when one of these things woke me up chomping on grass at the foot of my sleeping bag and nothing that I saw when I poked my head out to investigate could be described as beautiful. Where'd you come across these critters?
I guess, yeah, if I awoke nearly underfoot of one of these beasts, beauty would not be my first impression.
I took these shots on Arsenic Island.
Yeah, I'd been around'em before in the Tetons and Yellowstone but never that close nor before I'd had my coffee.

Right? And our bisons both got picked up by the same curators. Maybe it was national bison day and we felt the vibe. Or maybe we need to make that national antelope island bison day.

LOL yeah I think he was more annoyed by the ignorant humans that were getting out of their cars to take pictures. I drove away before I got the chance to see those people get trampled.

I'm thinking the west has more wild life, or more wild, or more of both. Grizzly bears you can keep though.
LOL Nooooo I don't want Grizzly bears. I mean, I want them to exist, sure, but not in my presence, ever. I ordered a 2-pack of bear spray for my trip. I'm seriously terrified, even though I'm not gonna let it stop me.
What?!!! You don't want a nice warm snuggly mauling from a grizzly bear? What's a little blood shed between species? I simply don't know why you wouldn't want that. 🤪😂
I do not blame you one bit. I'd have the industrial strength, several cans, along with other things of a more explosive nature. Grizzlies and polar bears the bears that I do not want to ever have to deal with. Brown bears and black bears I'm used to, but still not something to mess with either.
My understanding is that brown bears and black bears can be scared off with things like whistles, bells, yelling, banging on pots and pans. Grizzlies, on the other hand, they're like, "What's that, a fly? Lemme peel back the doors of your car so I can eat this bag of peanuts." Polar bears I have no idea. Probably the same, but they glow in the dark under the moonlight and northern lights as they tear into your chest and you watch.
I've read that Polars and Grizzlies have been known to interbreed. I'm wondering if this is a way to counteract the dilemma of natural habitat for Polar bears disappearing rapidly. Maybe I'll meet one of those.
I used to have the cuddliest little polar bear stuffed animal. Thinking about it now makes me LOL.
Yes, that's right about black & brown bears. Biggest concerns with them are if it's a mom and cubs, or if it's a food/garbage thing.
Yeah, that's the thing about grizzlies, none of htat works with them, far bigger and far more aggressive when encountered. I'd rather just not meet them, lol. Same with polar bears. Interesting they interbreed. If you meet one, take photos if you can.

That's funny, I also had a little one too as a child, gifted to me by brother dear. I had forgotten all about that until you mentioned you had one. Snuggle a polar bear, oh yeah, that's not happening, not ever. If it did, I'm sure it'd be a case of me being eaten.
Both my bear sprays came in the mail a couple days ago.
I guess there will be moms with cubs in August but I'll just use my apparent wildlife-charming skills so I don't have to blind mama and put babies in danger.
My friend is convinced grizzlies will break into my car while I'm sleeping in it to get my food? I think I would wake up before that happened, though. Pretty sure Pilot will say something before Mr. Bear busts open my windshield.
My mom once left dog food in her 4-runner and her sunroof cracked and overnight a black bear tore into that thing like it was no big deal. She said it was permanently broken and there was dog food everywhere.
LOL, you're armoured! I'm sure you'll be fine as long as you are aware. I have been around mama & cubs, just at a distance.
What a visual, holy moley crapola! Good thing I didn't sleep in the back of a truck with no secure closures while in grizzly country. I haven't heard of that happening, but I think you're well situated in terms of having a dog with you and no reason to worry unless you're planning on turning your car into a rolling restaurant.
Ouch about what your mom had to deal with. Dog food? Wow! Maybe an armoured car isn't a bad idea.
Ha, funny to see your reply on this today. My friend brought it up again yesterday, and was like "do you need me to send you videos of bears peeling open cars like a sardine can??!!!" I told her I was not going to put my cooler in a bear bag and string it up every night, and that I could just jump into the driver seat and leave... I also thanked her for her concern and told her it made me feel valued.
That's too funny. I must go looking for videos like that. I need to see. You'd also have to put your cooler at distance from your car as well as hang it up every night. I wouldn't worry about it like that. You were really kind to her in your response.

Yes, I like having a tent that locks that I can drive away in the middle of the night if necessary.
I know, that's the part that scares me most about bears, the smartness level. My father told me that if they are wounded, they will go clean it, then pack it with moss and so on. That blew my mind. Mental note, never screw with a bear, outmatched in intelligence, strength and speed. 😂
So you sleep in your car? Must be a cool set up you have. I'm getting really jelly of your camping you know. LOL!
I'm not surprised bears do smart shit. I hope that if I run into a bear on a hike my respect for them will shine through like it does with the crows. I'm not afraid of crows, though, so that energy will be pretty different.
I'll get shots of my setup once it's all set up!
I'm not either, just didn't realize they were so adept at opening cars by the handle. Bears are always to be respected in my mind.
