The Tipping Tipping Point

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to rant a little bit about how absurd the tipping culture is these days!

The Tipping Tipping Point

Tipping: forced bullshit these days!

I wanted to chat about something that really grinds my gears.. how every Point of Sale (POS [we may like to confuse it with Piece of Shit, IMO]) system these days does the same fucking annoying ass thing.. asks how much you would like to tip the person.

IMG_1717.jpg

Now I'm not Scrooge McDuck, where I'm being super stingy with my money but at the same time, where is the fucking line dude? I mean come on! If I'm buying something and someone is pouring a cup of coffee for me and handing it over, not making some fancy whirl buzz bullshit with a foam heart and the tears of a newborn baby albino sloth around the rim of the lid of the cup, why the hell are you asking me if I would like to tip the person? Am I a fucking boomer on that shit?!? I certainly would hope not...

I don't know if this is just another way for "the man" to get inserted into the financial transaction of tipping. If you tip with a card, there is a clear and obvious record of that. It can then be financially tracked and likely deducted from the persons taxes or earnings at the end of the year. The thought of giving a tip with a card to me though is absolutely asinine. I tip people who wait on my table if we are out to dinner, as long as they didn't suck of course, but for someone making me a drink or the most recent example of a place that I called to order a pizza, makes the pizza and is making money off said pizza that I bought from them. Why do I have to give them a tip if I drove to the place to pick it up?

IMG_1657 edit.jpg

If I paid with cash, I would toss the excess change in there because I don't really love having change jingling around in my pants pocket but that type of tipping is okay to me. I don't mind giving a tip where it's some money that there is no middleman involved in the transaction. Tipping with a card for everyday things like this though is getting way too much. I would say something to these places about it but I know they don't control that shit at all, they sign up for a POS and they get sent whatever hardware and software package they can afford. It's unfortunately likely expensive so they are stressed out about that. I don't need to add a little bit of unnecessary stuff on top of it.

I can still call bullshit where I see it though! I see bullshit for sure with this obsession with tipping. For small companies I don't mind tipping, like mom and pop places. I drop them a dollar or two when I can but big places like Starbucks? I ain't tipping that shit, sorry! They make billions hand over fist, and could likely pay their workers a bit more if it came down to it. I know it may seem like a douche move but I feel like they need the tips less than the family owned pizza place down the road. The extra money there could help pay for kids school clothes, a tank of gas or something. That's where I focus my tip money on, and certainly not on a cup of coffee..

Am I wrong with this one?! I would like to not think so.. but wonder what others are thinking on this!

The PoS machines often ask for 20% and 30% tips.

Most of the businesses I work with have a much smaller margin like 3% to 5%.

I never return to businesses that have these tip demanding point of sale systems.

I try not to judge the businesses too much, as I think I mentioned they likely just get a package the sales rep sells to them and that's it. It comes with that crap but it is annoying for sure. I don't even look at the %'s because I just always say no.

You're correct, the tip software must be approved by management. It will probably go bad for the workers in the long run.

Management will probably use the tips to reduce the base pay.

Once that happens then the glares one receives from the clerks will become even more menacing as the tips would be the major part of their pay.

Honest pricing is so much better than gimmicks.

Nothing more annoying than a pop up tip when you go to the counter. Especially if you aren't served at the table. Freaking buffets do them, I have to scoop and walk to the food why would I tip. I get annoyed by them and I work for tips part time. Even some fast food places have them. One place that annoyed me was a self service frozen yogurt place. They had boy and girl tip jars at the register. I get it and throw my own toppings on it why am tipping. Don't know if you have them but Orange Leaf. I don't think I have seen it yet but next will be tipping at a kiosk asking for tips, I already hate them to begin with haha

Oh man that's so ridiculous lol. I haven't been to an orange leaf but we do have them here. That's wicked dumb, self service things and they ask you for a tip lol wtf

Right, not all jobs warrant a tip but this is what the world is becoming. Shoot where's the nearest time machine lol

I thought it was because hospo wages suck in America.

It's not an easy job and someone has to do it. I don't know if you've ever worked in hospitality but...

Who carries change to tip with these days?

I always have cash on me for the very fact that they are trying to get rid of it. The more we use it and refuse to get rid of it, the harder it gets.

Wages do suck in some things but I think it’s far better to tip with cash than it is with a card. Can’t trace cash like you do a card.

The thing that annoys me more is the predatory social pressure to tip now. People watch from behind you and see if you tip or not and it’s annoying. I heard a lady at one of the places comment to the worker that she will give them a good tip because the person behind her didn’t. A tip shouldn’t be about making a scene like that, that shits annoying.

Yeah that whole busy body moralising has seemed to escalate these days.

Australia's sooo close to being cashless it's insane.

Ah that’s not good, Australia was a bit of the epicenter for totalitarian shit during the last 3 years, I can only imagine what a cashless society will look like.

For the love of all that is holy, do NOT get a “smart” anything. Thermostat, fridge, none of that bullshit. The discounts are a complete smokescreen for total control of our lives. Not to get dark or anything!
