Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I’ll be sharing some pictures of what we think is a groundhog!

Summer Groundhogs

One of the fun things I write about is all of the different wildlife we find on our family adventures. It turns out that there’s a lot of things around if you slow down, pay attention and look! This is definitely one of those times!

We were enjoying the beach the other day when we were walking up the path back to the area that had a bathroom. Out of the corner of my eye I see something move and lately I’ve tried to just see what it is so that we could potentially show the little man some cool animals. This was one of those times! Hanging out on the big rock was a groundhog or a woodchuck depending on who you ask. I think they are the same thing!

We stayed still and the groundhog was actually pretty relaxed and just hanging out on the rock. It was a pretty warm day so he might have figured it wasn’t worth running away since it was hot and these big animals looking at me are just looking. He was giving the little man an eye in this one!

He turned towards me to say hello it seems! I was surprised how close I was able to get to him without it moving. I was maybe 10 feet from it. Most animals would dart away but this guy was relaxed! I bet if I had some food I could have probably coaxed it out lol. We don’t like to do that if we don’t have to though, we don’t want to change the animals instinct towards people and end up getting hurt or sick from cruel or people who don’t think it’s a bad idea to feed it a Twinkie.

It was a lot of fun to see one! We haven’t seen one up close before so we definitely enjoyed the encounter. It’s a special thing to be able to see so much of the local wildlife wherever we go. These are great opportunities for showing the little man things that I think are important. So much focus is on the dry and mundane things with kids and school when we should be putting more of our attention and focus on getting them outside and interacting with animals and nature!

Yeah we were shocked that they let us get close lol. Usually these small rodents dart away as soon as you move!
